Janesville Babe Ruth state tournament-bound

All three Janesville Babe Ruth tournament teams have advanced to state tournament play.

Janesville’s 13- and 15-year-old teams qualified with easy wins Thursday. Janesville’s 13s used an eight-run inning to coast past Edgerton, 9-2. The 15-year-olds took advantage of an 11-run first inning en route to a 16-6 five-inning win over Middleton.

Janesville’s 14-year-old team qualified for state with two wins on Wednesday.

15-year-olds

-- Janesville 16, Middleton 6 (5)—An 11-run first inning was more than enough for Janesville’s 15-year-old tournament team Thursday at Cross Plains.

With the District 2 win, Janesville automatically earned a berth in next week’s state tournament at Eau Claire.

Tyler Campbell had a two-run double in the first for Janesville, while Aric Bobzien added a two-run single. Janesville finished with 10 hits in four innings.

Adam Greene pitched all five innings to get the win. Greene allowed only three hits and struck out four. Keaton Eichman had two of Janesville’s six doubles.

Janesville is scheduled to play the East Madison/Cross Plains winner in a semi-final game Friday night.

13-year-olds

-- Janesville 9, Edgerton 2—Janesville’s 13-year-old tournament team secured a state berth with an eight-run fourth at Middleton.

Nick Blomgren picked up the win with four solid innings, and combined with Jarod Hoffarth on a one-hitter. Blomgren also went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Jake Wyss and Connor Bowen drove in two runs each. Janesville sent 14 batters to the plate in the fourth in erasing a 2-1 deficit.

Janesville, 2-0 in the district tournament, plays host Middleton at noon today.

14-year-olds

-- Madison 4, Janesville 3—A four-run fourth inning lifted Madison to a victory over Janesville in the winners’ bracket at Reedsburg.

Despite the loss, Janesville has qualified for the state tournament in Marinette next week.

Troy Malmanger was the tough-luck loser for Janesville, allowing only five hits and striking out three in the complete game.

Adam Catacutan’s run-scoring triple helped Janesville take a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth.

Janesville plays the winner of the Reedsburg/Middleton game at 2:30 p.m. today.
