Arrest is ‘major blow’ to local drug trade

WHITEWATER A Whitewater man police called “the main supplier for drugs in the area” made his initial court appearance Monday on heroin and cocaine charges.
Jimmie Minett Jr., 43, of 477 N. Fremont St., is charged with three counts of delivering 3 grams or less of heroin, possession of cocaine with intent to deliver and possession of narcotic drugs.
Minett was arrested after a traffic stop Feb. 22 at Walworth Avenue and Elizabeth Street, according to a Whitewater police press release.
Police found a “significant amount” of illegal drugs, Sgt. Tina Winger said. The drugs have a total street value of about $700, she said. Police also found a couple hundred dollars in cash Winger said.
The arrest was the culmination of a months-long investigation by the Whitewater Police Department and the Walworth County Drug Enforcement Unit, according to the press release.
While Minett was being taken into custody, police ordered nearby schools, including Whitewater High School, be put in lock-down in case Minett was carrying a weapon, according to the release. Police found no weapons, and the lock-down was lifted after Minett was in custody, according to the release.
The arrest is considered a “major blow” to the illegal drug trade in the area, Winger said.
“It’s significant for Whitewater because of the amount (of drugs) that was found on him … and because he’s a local resident and he was probably the main supplier for drugs in the area,” she said.
Minett was being held in the Walworth County Jail on a $25,000 cash bond.

What's with the tattoo comments? My son is a wonderful tattoo artist, doesn't do drugs, and is an upstanding citizen. He also has "sleeves", if you know what they are. Both of his arms are all tattoos and are done with class. I am 46 and have a tattoo. Maybe I'll go rob a bank, sounds good to me!

jayem- It's quite sad how much hatred you have for anyone that isn't like you. I find it odd that you correlate tattoos with drug use. Neither of the two need to go hand in hand. One doesn't lead to the other. The only time they do go together is when a person chooses to partake in both. As for your idea that having a tattoo prevents a person from ever having a "real" job; have you ever ripped the sleeves off of someones shirt to check. Many professionals do have tattoos, yet still maintain their appearance. I'm sure you didn't mean "those" people though. Only the "really" trashy people. Well, you've shown that it doesn't take tattoos, drugs, or rampant breeding to form an opinion that is complete garbage. In fact, you've shown everyone that stupid people come in all varieties.

And jayem- your sweeping genralizations aside, I don't think premarital sex(which isn't premarital if you have no intention of getting married!) smoking some grass and customizing YOUR body however you'd like is degrading society. Maybe inasmuch that there's a huge flux for irresponsible behavior because conservative people like you grow a pair, start to have a little fun and go from one extreme to the other. I see it all the time. Ever seen a conservative, protected kid come home from their first year of college? Rebellion. That's what you're seeing, on a much larger scale. But I don't think it's rebellion as much as getting liberated. Sometimes you gotta hit bottom before you come up, and this kind of shake up to traditional views is just what the doctor ordered, with all due respect.I think what you're complaining about has more to do with the conservative repression you describe-and most likely pass on with your SELECTIVE breeding(sounds more like a solid alibi for explaining not getting what you go after, but that's just a random thought, which holds no validity I admit)- than you think. Just spitballin' here. What else you got?

jayem:
I actually have never used an illegal drug in my life. I just don't believe it's the governments role to tell someone what they can do in their own home/private property in the name of "security". In a public place, that is a whole other story. In the words of Ben Franklin: "Those who give away freedoms to gain security, deserve neither". If you don't want your kids doing drugs; gee, here is a RADICAL IDEA...Teach them NOT to do it! Hard concept for many to grasp these days, I know.
.
This article really makes me laugh even more, everytime I read it again. I have even forwarded it to some friends for a good laugh. Many are asking me if it's really a hard news story, or just a sarcastic piece? The "major blow" part really makes it hard to believe it's a serious article, once you hear it's a $700 bust!

No wonder this town is filled with whatever you were talking about, if you're disposition on Janesville and it's residents always comes out sounding so peachy-keen, then thanks for being a key player!
And if you don't know that a 700$ bust in a college town ISN'T even more than personal to some people, then I feel bad for what else you don't know or just believe blind in the media. Don't sound so clueless, being clueless doesn't get you free and clear!Since this is an epidemic, you might want to start educating yourself on this stuff, I mean it's in the paper at least once every other week, so it shouldn't be that hard to educate yourself, me thinks. =)

The $700 part is what really makes this story BEYOND humorous, and shows just how clueless many really are in this.
.
The story I articulated below, was one that really WAS a bust that took down an operation that was doing well over a million $'s in a high volume month (football season). The "bust" literally had ZERO effect on the people who were gambling. It just made operations be more cautious with cell phone numbers, SIN cards, record keeping, ext.
.
These stories are just law enforcement using the media as a PROPAGANDA ARM! They like to put out this picture to the soccer Moms that the police really are keeping all this stuff away from your kids, and here is the proof...A $700 BUST baby! Look at us! We are stopping all this evil vice behavior!! Trust me when I say; no matter HOW "BIG" the bust (even if it's a bust of a multi-million $$ operation) you won't stop ANYTHING. Like TheKid said; it's like trying to plug a thousands of holes in a dam. All you really do by "cracking down" is take a way a LITTLE bit of supply. Demand will always be there, and the ones who benefit from the supply shortage are the ones who DON'T GET CAUGHT doing the supplying, as it drives up what they can charge, and profit margins, even more!

Wasn't there an article just last year from Whitewater where 8 or so people were arrested on drug related charges and that was supposed to be a major disruption in the Whitewater drug "trade"? Anyone who thinks there are less drugs in Whitewater today than the day before Minett got arrested is grossly out of touch with reality.

Wait a MINETT! Did I read what I thought I did? (pause, looks again) YEP! That is a really silly thing for that person to say -"Major Blow" to drug trade. The amount of money found is nothing more than pocket change. The illegal drugs found were not much if value was 7 hundred dollars. This is almost like a Saturday Night Live comedy sketch. I take that back - it's better.

Bottom line fo the story- if you dont DECREASE the DEMAND you'll NEVER slow down the SUPPLY. Money to be mad? Just water rushing back in people. I think most of us know it, but if not, read again. It's right there in black and white. It's not about the drugs off the street or coming in blah blah. It's demand. If someone is going to be ridiculous amounts of cash for something, someone will find a way to capitalize on that. More risk=more money. More busts= more profit. These dogs are just chasing their tails =P

Did Sgt. Tina Winger have her tongue firmly planted in her cheek when she said "It’s significant for Whitewater because of the amount (of drugs) that was found on him … and because he’s a local resident and he was probably the main supplier for drugs in the area,"? If she didn't, then somebody had better educate her. If Mr. Jimmie Minett Jr. had been found with 10 or 20 kilos, then maybe her statement would have been worth some merit.

Lol come one Police Officers, you need to draw the line between a little bit of boasting and exaggeration for yourselves so the community feels like theres actually an impact being made, and keeping your citizens taking you seriously. This is just insulting, for you to tell me and expect meto believe this was big for a COLLEGE town such as whitewater where drugs are MUCH more rampant and easier to find that janesville, milton, edgerton, etc. It's laughable and insulting that this story was fed to us in the context it was. How stupid do they think we are? lol 3 grams of heoin? ooooo, wow, like 25-30 bindles from what i've gathered on here, a bindle(20-30$) is 1/10 a gram of heroin. Many people buy as many as 5 or 10 at a time for ONE fix. and this is has significant impact? Please.

I would suggest that the JG review press releases such as these before printing them as fact. Your DEAD ON janesvillecomments:
.
I remember years back when I was in Chicago, and a rival booking operation was raided, and hit hard by the Feds. The papers claimed that this was a "MAJOR BLOW" to organized crime, and the illegal gambling rings that infested the city...blah blah. We all got a good laugh out of it, as all it did was increase the volumes to the competing street books from the void left from the hit!
.
It was only a matter of months before all the people who were taken down in this "HUGE HIT" (as described in the papers) were all back in the business. Lot of them just paid a fine (wrote it off as a cost of business), and made all the fine $$$ back in a few months. Others paid some bribes to the feds, and or judges, and had everything dropped. While others did a few months time, and were back in action in no time.
.
The whole thing is one big joke. It's all about publicity, and never about actually solving the problem. The problem being that you will NEVER stop vice behavior that people will always find a way to do...drugs, prostitution, gambling. Just a massive WASTE of public resources trying to stop it when you could be cashing in a fortune legalizing it, and taxing it!

"The arrest is considered a “major blow” to the illegal drug trade in the area, Winger said."
Unfortunately, it won't be a major blow. Drug arrests, small or large, are like scooping water out of Lake Michigan. You may take a small measuring cup's worth out, or a 5 gallon bucket of water out of the lake, but you don't dry out the lake bed under where you scooped out water.
Someone once posted a link in the Gazette blogs to a video from Law Enforcement Against Prohibition http://www.leap.cc where the life cycles of drug dealers was described. There are periodic months-long or years-long investigations against major drug dealers and they get arrested and within a week a new crew is selling the same drugs at the same location. It's a sad truth that no drug busts have lasting effects on the drug trade.
I don't advocate the use of illegal drugs, but it's painfully obvious prohibition isn't working to stop or contain the use of drugs. It encourages the bribery of police and politicians. The innocent suffer from higher taxes to pay for more police and medical people, and as victims caught in the crossfire of dealers and dealers or dealers and police. We wind up with corrupt lawmakers, district attorneys, and judges.
We need to legalize the drugs to remove the incentives of criminal distribution and the glamor their use has for children and the stupid. We can then use the money formerly spent on enforcement to cover treatment costs and to work on reducing the numbers of people using drugs, and supplement that by taxing the drugs the way currently legal drugs such as tobacco and alcohol have extra taxes.

These stories have been written for decades. Yet, illegal drug use continues to rise, to cause gang crime, to cause increased property crime. Countries like The Netherlands, Portugal, which have legalized drug use while increasing addition treatment have seen a decrease in crime, a decrease in prison costs, and a decreased costs to taxpayers.
