WIAA boys basketball preview
It’s high school boys basketball tournament time.
WIAA postseason action in all four enrollment divisions begins at 7 tonight at the regional level, with semifinals in Division 1 and quarterfinals in Divisions 2, 3 and 4. Semifinals for the three lower divisions are Thursday, and all regional finals are Saturday.
Sectionals, which determine state qualifiers, are split between Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 11-13. The state tournament is March 18-20 at the Kohl Center in Madison.
These are the prospects for the 20 sectionals leading to the state tournament, which again will have eight teams in Division 1, four each in Divisions 2, 3 and 4:
Division 1
BELOIT SECTIONAL
2009 champion: Beloit Memorial (def. Elkhorn, 66-62 in double overtime, in sectional final at Janesville Craig).

Notable: Beloit is looking for its 27th trip to the state tournament, which would tie Superior Central for the most appearances. The Purple Knights have won seven state championships, tying them with Randolph for the record. Beloit tied with Verona and Middleton for thrid place in the Big Eight this season. The Knights swept the season series from Verona, 63-59 and 73-62, and have beaten Big Eight co-champions Madison East, 69-62, and Madison Memorial, 84-71. Beloit is led by K.J. Evans, the Big Eight’s second-leading scorer with a 17.3 average.
Janesville Craig, a perennial power in this sectional, is a stunning 0-22 this season. The Cougars made seven state appearances in 22 years under coach Bob Suter, who retired after last season … Kenosha Bradford won the Southeast Conference championship by default when top-ranked Racine Park, which would have been 22-0, forfeited 10 victories because of ineligible players.

Notable: Madison Memorial has won this sectional the last six years. The Spartans have been in four of the last four state title games and also won the championship in 2005. They are coming off a tie for their seventh straight Big Eight championship. They defeated Madison East, 56-49, in a regular-season finale to avenge a 57-44 overtime loss and force the title tie with the Purgolders.
East is looking for its first state appearance since 1990. The Purgolders won 1958 state title in Pat Richter’s junior season.

6-4 senior Marquis Mason, the Big Eight scoring champion an 18.6 average and a University of Wisconsin football recruit. Memorial is led by Marquette University basketball recruit Vander Blue, who averaged 16.8 in the Big Eight this season.
UW-OSHKOSH SECTIONAL

Falls features one of the most-talked-about players in 6-6 sophomore Jean Pierre Tokoto … Five-time state champion Milwaukee Vincent, which used to own this sectional, is 14-6 this season as a No. 5 seed.

Notable: Racine Park won all 22 of its games on the court, but the Panthers forfeited 10 victories because of ineligible players related to truancy problems. That cost Park the state’s No. 1 rating and the Southeast Conference championship, which was awarded to Kenosha Bradford, but the Panthers will be at full strength for the tournament … City Conference champion Milwaukee Hamilton is coached by Tom, Diener, who led Milwaukee Vincent to five state titles. Hamilton had a 12-game winning streak broken by Milwaukee King, 89-85, in a regular-season finale. The Wildcats’ other two losses were to South Carolina teams in the Beach Ball Classic in South Carolina. If Hamilton wins the state title, it might be the first to do so without a senior on the roster.

Notable: Milwaukee King, a five-time state champion, returns to the tournament after sitting out last year in a self-imposed penalty. The Generals lost to Washington, 51-46, in the last week of the regular season, but they fired up for the tournament with an 89-85 victory over City Conference champion Hamilton in their finale. Washington has won eight of its last nine games, but two Purgolders players are under investigation after reported contact with an official following Friday’s 58-55 loss to Milwaukee Bradley Tech.

Notable: Monroe just won four straight Badger Conference titles for the first time in history and is looking for a fourth straight state appearance and fifth in six years. The Cheesemakers won the open-class state championship in 1965 and the Division 2 title in 2007.
In the regular season’s only matchups of top-two seeded teams in this sectional, Monroe defeated Mount Horeb, 53-32. Prairie du Chien defeated River Valley, 67-61, then lost 61-52 to the Blackhawks. Monroe won a season opener from third-seeded Brodhead, 45-30, and could face the Cardinals in regional finals. The Chesemakers barely beat the Cardinals, 57-55, in last year’s regional semifinals.
Players to watch in this sectional include Monroe’s Bryan Tordoff, the Badger South scoring champion with an 17.4 average; J.J. Panoske, Brodhead’s 6-11 junior, the Rock Valley scoring champion, who has topped the 30-point mark seven times and has a 22.4 average; and Tyler Butke, a 6-5 senior with a 19.5 average for Delavan-Darien, which has won nine of its last 12 games.

Notable: This loaded sectional, which has produced the last two state champions and a finalist the last three years, may have the firepower to upstage the state tournament. Flavien Davis, the leadng scorer on last year’s state championship team, is back with a 21.3 average for Wisconsin Lutheran’s Little Ten title team. Port Washington, coached by Janesville Craig graduate John Bunyan, features University of Wisconsin recruit Josh Gasser, a 6-4 senior guards with a 23.3 scoring average. Bunyan’s Pirates were state runners-up to Monroe in 2007.
Waukesha Memorial whipped Division 1 power Hartland Arrowhead twice, 65-41 and 67-61, in winning the Classic Eight championshio over the Warhawks. The Crusaders have won 14 straight since loising to Wisconsin Lutheran, 61-59, in December … East Troy, featuring a ton of three-point shooters, has won 16 straight en route to a fourth straight conference championship. Two of the Trojans’ three losses were to Waukesha Memorial, 72-60, and fourth-ranked Waupun, 91-83.

Notable: Northwestern again features one of the state’s highest rated players in 6-8 senior Donnie Hissa. While dominating the Heart O’ North, the Tigers played a tough nonconference schedule that included losses to Division 1 school Racine Case (61-540, Division 2 power Seymour (53-35) and two talented Minnesota teams. Mississippi Valley champion Onalaska may be Northwestern’s toughest challenge in this sectional, but Hilltoppers just lost to Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau.

Notable: Seymour has represented this sectional at the state tournament eight of the last 10 years and 10 of the last 14, winning three championships and finishing second five times. With a 10-game winning streak, topping off a 16-0 run through the Bay Conference, the Thunder may be knocking on the door again, but this sectional also is loaded. One player to watch is Waupun’s 6-3 senior, Austin Armga, a Michigan Tech recruit with a 25.3 average. The sectional darkhorse may be Little Chute, led by former Orfordville Parkview coach Mickey Martin, whose team has won 15 straight since losing to New Berlin Eisenhower, 40-36, in December.

Notable: Cuba City was No. 1 in the AP ratings until this week, after the Cubans had their pefect record spoiled by Darlington, 63-53, in a regular-season finale. The Cubans won the first meeting, 57-53, and the two wound up sharing the Southwdest Wisconsin Activities championship. They could meet again Saturday in regional final at Monroe.
Cuba City, which looking for its fourth state title under 706-game career winner Jerry Petitgoue, is led by UW-Milwaukee recruit Evan Richards’ 23-point average. Another of the sectional’s outstanding players is Orfordville Parkview guard Nick Melton (22 ppg), whose 15-7 team team opens tonight at Belleville (14-8) and could play Cuba City on Thursday.

Notable: This sectional could be headed for a title rematch between Marathon and Roncalli, who are in opposite brackets. Marathon, which just overtook Cuba City as the top-ranked team, is on its best basketball run since winning three consecutive Class C state championships in 1975-77.

Notable: Randoph, led by 6-10 senior Kyle Kelm’s 20.6 scoring average, is shooting for its sixth state title in nine years and a state-record eighth overall. All have come under coach Bob Haffele since 1996, and Randolph is the only school in any division to win four straight state titles (2002-05).
This year’s Rockets rolled through an unbeaten regualar season with four wins over Division 1 schools, one over a Division 2 team and yet another over Division 3 power Whitefish Bay Dominican. Their biggest challenge in ruling the state may be in this loaded sectional, which has defending state champion Benton (Haffele’s hometown) coming off a fourth straight conference title.

Notable: Green Lake won the North Divison in the Trailways Conference, where Randoph (Central), Williams Bay and Rio (South) took the other titles. Green Lake lost to Randolph, 44-34, in a crossover nonconference game. The Lakers’ other loss was to Turner, 47-43.
