Detectives investigate damage in jail cell
JANESVILLE Rock County Sheriff’s detectives are investigating who is responsible for damaging a heavy metal security screen in a cell in C-Unit at the Rock County Jail.
Correctional staff discovered the damage at about 10:15 a.m. Thursday on a routine security check, according to a sheriff’s office news release. The unit where the damage was discovered houses the disciplinary segregation unit of the jail.
According to the news release:
After the damage was discovered, the inmate in the cell was removed. Staff determined a metal security shelf also had been pried from the wall, though the shelf had been put back in place when the damage was discovered.
Officials believe the shelf was used to damage the security screen.
After the damage was discovered, the facility was placed in lockdown and a security inspection and shakedown for contraband was conducted.
At no time was the security of the jail compromised or breached. Investigators believe the damage was not a result of an escape attempt.
The sheriff’s office detective bureau is investigating to determine who is responsible and why the damage was caused. An administrative review also is being conducted to review security procedures and determine if policies or procedures were followed by security staff leading up to the incident.

For some reason....I have a suspicion this was done as a diversion.... this is some pretty obvious damage, wonder what the real plan is?

Digriz...too bad we seem to agree on the health care issue! The design of that cell block area is horrible and not directly supervised. Line staff can only react most of the time, and not right away. It has nothing to do with their work ethic. It's ergonomics and staffing levels. You just don't know and that's okay I guess.

Yes, I suspect that whoever did this committed at least one other crime before. Now that's a very important clue.
I suspect Columbo would have this thing wrapped-up in 60 minutes, minus commercials.

Bobwood...you make sense, but only because you don't know how it is all laid out in there. Have you ever visited the cell blocks? Noise is everywhere. You would be lucky to hear firecrackers. Jailers are not in the midst of the inmates either, and anything can happen and not get noticed until later on.

DiGriz...Yes, I wondering that too. I mean, it was a confined area, with an inmate in the confined area... that certainly seems like it might be a slight possibility. We should call the police and tell them!!!!
