— Edgerton High sophomore golfer Brooke Ferrell is on her way be to state as a sectional champion.

Ferrell, who placed fifth in the WIAA Division 2 state tournament last year, shot a 1-under-par 71 for medalist honors Tuesday in the Madison Edgewood Sectional at Yahara Hills.

Ferrell fired a 1-under 35 on the front and a par 36 coming in to earn her second trip to trip to the state tournament Monday and Tuesday at University Ridge in Madison.

Ferrell posted four birdies, a bogey and double bogey at No. 17 with a four-putt green. McFarland's Annie Culver fired a 39-37—76 to finish second.

Three of Ferrell's last four tournament rounds have been under par. She won last week's regional with a 1-under 73 at Lancaster Country Club, shot a par 71 to win the Parker Invitational at Janesville Riverside and carded a 3-under 68 to win the Cardinal-Spartan Invitational at Pleasant View.

"My driver is working, and I'm hitting wedges fairly close," Ferrell said of the reasons for her success.

While Ferrell gained medalist honors, Edgerton's team fell short of making a return trip to state. The Crimson Tide shot a 374 to finish fourth after being the Division 2 state runner-up last year.

Defending state champion Madison Edgewood shot a 327 to win the title, and Osseo-Fairchild carded a 362 to finish second and qualify for state.

"I'm excited to make state again, but disappointed my teammates won't be playing, too," Ferrell said.

Culver and Naomi Black (45-42—87) of Darlington-Cuba City joined Ferrell as the individual qualifiers. Black defeated Turner's Kate Engler, 5-6, in a playoff for the final qualifying spot after each shot an 87.
