Janesville’s Alcohol License Advisory Committee will meet at 8 a.m. Tuesday in City Hall, 18 N. Jackson St.

Janesville’s alcohol licensing committee will consider a request for a liquor license at 18-24 S. River St., a location that has seen a turnover of bars since Krause's Town & Country closed in 2006.

A public hearing is scheduled at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

In 2008, Mary Gorniak, owner of Spankys, relinquished her alcohol license after numerous police calls.

Most recently, Off the Wagon operated in the location. Owner Robert Forbush relinquished his license in July.

Mary McIntyre wants to operate Club Haven and the Bridgeport Bar n Grill, and she said in a letter to committee members that part of the establishment would cater to the gay community.

"The Haven had been previously operated as Off the Wagon Bar n Grille as this type of establishment and has strong support to continue from the (gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender) community," she said.

Club Haven will be a banquet facility on the weekends and during the week host karaoke, dart leagues and dancing, she said.

Members of the licensing committee asked McIntyre for more information about her business plan after it postponed a decision at its last meeting.

Matt Schreier, chairman of the licensing committee, said Friday that he had not yet had a chance to look at the information from McIntyre. The committee makes recommendations on issuing liquor licenses to the city council.

Some things the committee members consider in making their recommendation include the background of the person requesting the license, the location and the finances.

I don't think there is anything wrong with a bar and place to socialize for the gay community. I do question how the committee can ever justify giving an alcohol license to this particular party. Too much criminal record.

Why is the operating plan for this specific Bar published when no other one has? Is it becase of the support for a specific group of people to have a safe place to go with an OPEN FRIENDLY place of business. The Last 2 months of operation showed many that this was an awesome place and did not discriminate against anyone. Janesville needs to wake up and accept that all walks of life live in their fine city and need a place they can go to to enjoy a night out without being harassed or discriminated agaist. These bars are open to everyone and all will be treated with respect and offered a friendly atmoshere to enjoy themselves. They needed to print the whole picture of the plan for these 2 bars and not just something to serve the Gazette's selective part of the article. If you read the actual plan, this community as a whole will benifit from the events and fundraisers they will offer.
