JANESVILLE The man convicted of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend in Janesville will need nearly 20 years to pay restitution for funeral costs of his victim.
Kyle E. Hicke, 39, Milton, was ordered Thursday to pay $4,850 for a portion of funeral and gravestone costs in the murder of Erica M. Ostenson, 25, Janesville.
Hicke was arrested after the April 22 murder of Ostenson. He led police on a high-speed chase that ended when police rammed his vehicle.
He was sentenced May 13 to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 42 years, when he will be 80 years old. He had pleaded guilty to first-degree intentional homicide.
Hicke, appearing in Rock County Court via telephone Thursday, said he earns 12 cents an hour for his prison job. He said he has no assets or money because his dad paid his living expenses.
Judge James Daley ordered Hicke to pay a crime victim compensation fund, Bethel Baptist Church and Ostenson’s grandmother for their contributions to funeral costs.
Ostenson’s father was denied restitution because he didn’t appear in court or submit records proving his costs for the funeral, Daley said.
The insurance company wanting money for a damaged squad car used in Hicke’s arrest also was denied restitution because it was for a government agency, although a lawsuit could be filed to recover money, Daley said.
Hicke and Ostenson had dated for five years. They had lived together for three years and six months.

(perhaps this article isn't the best one to have a random comical conversation. I apologize to any of Erica's family or friends whom I may have inadvertantly offended...)

Dear Concerned,
nah. I expect no problems. I do expect you will fall on your head though, and that you will then leave my column alone. no problem.

Dear ms...sassy,
To get more bang for my buck, I like to drink vodka straight from the bottle while hanging upside down like a bat. Should I expect problems?

I, for one, am glad the Gazette revised the article. It now says that Hicke is no longer "allegedly" the killer, but admitted guilt and has been convicted. Thanks, Gazette, and Mr. Sullivan, for correcting what probably seems to some like a minor error.

The Gazette is famous for that! When you comment under an article, make a folder under your favorites and place it there. If the article is gone it won't show up when clicked on but if the article is still there it will show up. Just a suggestion. As for this dirtbag, I hope he rots in you know where!

Thankfully, most people'd rather have him where he is AND for the taxpayers to help the family. That's my nice comment. What I'd rather say about this idiot would banish me from posting ever again.
