Janesville Craig’s boys and girls cross country teams opened up the 2011 season with a bang Thursday.
The Cougar boys earned a perfect score of 15 with the top seven runners in winning the Milton Rock Run. Tommy Meister won the 5,000-meter race in 16:44, while teammate Spencer Hrycay was second in 17:08.
Milton, led by John Wells’ eighth-place finish, was second with 52.
Craig’s girls won with a total of 27, while Milton was second with 48.
Milton’s Mandi Speer won the 4,000-meter race in 16:48, while Craig’s Michaela Holzhuter was third in 17:05.
“Today was all about the team and trying to run together, and that’s exactly what the boys and girls teams did,” Craig co-head coach Brian Lawton said. “It was a nice team victory for both of the them and a good way to start the season.”
