Not guilty plea entered in fatal crash
JANESVILLE Rock County Court Commissioner Charles Holznecht entered a not guilty plea Wednesday for a Beloit man accused of killing a Janesville man while driving drunk in October.
Derrick Richardson, 42, of 1433 Copeland Ave., Beloit, stood mute to charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and sixth-offense intoxicated driving. He is accused of hitting and killing Anthony M. Sears, 79, of 3104 Village Court, No. 7, Janesville, at 9:22 a.m. Oct. 15 on Mount Zion Avenue near Excalibur Drive on Janesville's east side.
Richardson also is charged with causing death while operating a motor vehicle after revocation and hit and run resulting in death. He is being held in the Rock County Jail on a $40,000 cash bond.
Richardson said he had not been drinking since 3:30 a.m. the day of the crash, according to the complaint. He was reaching for a dropped cigarette when he struck what he later learned was a person, according to the complaint.
Sears died Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center, Janesville.
