— The Rock County Board will have a first reading and a public hearing Thursday on an ordinance setting countywide standards for slow/no wake along the Rock River.

The board is not expected to discuss or vote on the ordinance until sometime in January, county officials have said.

The ordinance would set slow/no wake at these depths on the Rock River and parts of Lake Koshkonong:

-- 7.5 feet from Indianford dam to the north Rock County line. The standard is based on flood gauge readings at Newville.

-- 6.5 feet on from Indianford dam to the south Rock County line. The standard is based on flood gauge readings at Afton.

The standards are essentially the status quo criteria for slow/no wake in place in most county townships.

The Rock-Koshknong Lake District opposes the proposed standards, saying they’re too restrictive. Others oppose the proposal, arguing that boats cruising in water just below flood action stage would damage shore property and add to erosion.

The hearing is at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Rock County Courthouse, 51 South Main St., Janesville.
