Fredricks wins 500 title on long track
WEST ALLIS Heather Richardson and Janesville native Tucker Fredricks won 500-meter titles Wednesday night at the U. S. Speed Skating Long Track Championships.
Both skaters finished first in the two heats that decided the race.
Richardson, of High Point, N.C., had times of of 38 seconds and 37.96. Fredricks skated 34.92 in the first race and 34.95 in the second.
Fredricks slipped in the final turn of the first race. Still, he came within .01 seconds of tying the Pettit National Ice Center record for the 500 set by Canada's Jeremy Wotherspoon on Nov. 27, 2005.
The competition runs through Sunday with skaters having a rest day Friday.
