People of all sorts seek fun at Redneck Fest
Photo Gallery
JANESVILLE Redneck Fest was a lot like a lot of other summer festivals, although it packed a lot of cigarette smoke, beer and tattoos into a small space.
The fest’s second and final sweaty day was Saturday. Here are some of the sights on the grounds:
Mud for a good cause
The Hog Pen is what they call the giant mud puddle where, for $10, people could get their vehicles wet and muddy—and sometimes stuck. Proceeds, like all other “profits” at the fest, go to Easter Seals’ Camp Waubeek.
Fest organizer Jack Herndon said he hoped to be able to donate about $10,000 to the charity that helps people with disabilities.
Asked what the rules were for the trucks and SUVs trying their luck in the 40-foot-wide puddle, fest volunteer Jon Yeadon said: “Just have fun,” which could be the Fest’s unofficial motto.
Spatterings
Pickups sent up huge brown rooster tails as they sped into the muddy water. One sported spongy dice featuring the Confederate battle flag dangling from the rear-view mirror.
One truck spun its tires to fling mud into the crowd, spattering one woman’s leg.
“At least it’s not s---,” she said good-naturedly.
The woman, who would not give her name because she works for the state, praised the Fest: “This is what Janesville needs, a free event, with the economy. Everybody’s having fun, and you can take the kids and not worry about ‘em getting snatched up.
“There’s a lot of drinking going on, of course,” she added upon reflection.
Kids welcome
A children’s play area was provided, but it was within earshot of one stage where guitarist Captain Jack gleefully sang songs that featured vulgarities and adult situations. Kids seemed to ignore it.
One attraction allowed kids or adults to “shoot” each other in the woods for five minutes, for a $5 fee.
The paintball guns they used had no projectiles. The guns shot puffs of compressed air while registering, through laser technology, when a shooter was “hit” and when he had “killed” someone.
Montanna Dutcher, 10, said she had never experienced anything like it.
“It was awesome,” she said.
Why?
“I don’t know.”
What did you like the best about it?
“Shooting people.”
What’s a redneck?
The fest wasn’t for rednecks only. Hairstyles varied from bald to long and shaggy to one man with impressive dreadlocks. A lot of skin was exposed, and styles varied greatly, from short shorts over cowboy boots to the classic no-sleeves shirt to a guy with his polo shirt tucked neatly into Bermuda shorts over loafers. Many were clearly there for the rock bands, which might didn’t appear to be playing many songs from the Redneck Top 100.
It was hard to tell who might be a redneck and who was just taking in the sights.
Among the dozens of fest volunteers was Kevin Martin of Janesville, who was asked what “redneck” means to him.
“It’s just good people that have a lot of common ideas—good American values—freedom—who like having a good time, pretty much accepting of everybody,” he said.
Bands bring crowds
Herndon said about 800 people attended Friday, which was dedicated to country music. Saturday was for rock, which was expected to draw several thousand people.
Herndon had no crowd estimate at 8:15 p.m., shortly before national touring band Bobaflex went on, but he said it was the biggest crowd in the Fest’s history.
“This is amazing. I can hardly believe it,” he said by phone.
The Kansas City, Kan., band Quietly Violent performed Saturday afternoon.
“This is the story of my life,” the lead singer said before one song. “It’s called ‘12 Pages of Bull-----.’”
Herndon said many of the day’s bands were harder edged than at previous Redneck Fests. For all that, the sound systems were not turned to the max.
People could generally hear each other talk. As one observer put it, “you can stand in front of the stage without your ears bleeding.”
The law
Janesville police have visited Redneck Fest grounds several times, and Herndon thanked them for doing their jobs.
The only incident came when police stopped three people after they jumped the plastic fence and walked off the grounds with beers in their hands, Herndon said.
Janesville police said the three were cited for drinking in public, and one was arrested on two warrants from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office.

Thejoker: Awwwwwwwww cry us a river you little crybaby! The only reason the anger is brought on against you is because you asked for it, with your closed minded attitude! So sorry not everyone is as perfect as you seem to think that you are with spelling and grammar. If you don't like the spelling and grammar in some of the posts, maybe you should just stay in the cocoon of your "successful business",and warped little mind, where you can be your own spell-nazi!

Once again, I would suggest people use spell and grammar check before you post. Your lack of skill in these areas really make yourself look even more foolish than the comments you post.
Anger, name calling and hate are all being directed to me. This is obviously the same behavior that is being found at Redneck Fest. As usual, I prove my point! End of discussion.

TheJoker... It is amazing how you continue to pick one phrase and twist it to suit yourself. Some of my close friends are in fact black and hispanic. It's something I never notice except when idiots like you spout off. Why did you ignore the rest of my comments. I guess even you can't come up with a way to insult my nieces, nephew or grandfather. Also, why is your money and business a part of this dialogue? Does it in any way relate to our event? No, it does not. It's just your sad way of making yourself feel like you're better than the rest of us.

This festival is a disgrace to Janesville. Why is the Gazette promoting a racist event?! Shame on you Janesville and those who put this degrading event together.
This is not a degrading event at all. Usually the biggest racist is the one yelling racism the most. In this case it's you! Granted you don't have to say what companies that you claim to own, then again I guess I can't blame you for being afraid to say what companies that you claim to own for fear that you will loose customers for your close minded thinking.

TheJoker, I addressed that at the beginning of this dialogue. You may review that at your leisure. However, I will add that if race were a factor at this event, I would never have been associated with it. Some of my closest friends are black & hispanic, the father of my sister’s children is from Mexico, my grandfather was Jewish. Do NOT preach to me about racism. I’ve been up close and personal with it and HATE it. Race has never been nor will it ever be a factor in this event! This was made evident by the bands, vendors, and people in the crowd!!! By the way, I also know a lot of people in Janesville. They are a wonderful, diverse group of people who came out and had fun while supporting a great cause.

Vonnie and Justincase, I give plenty to charity and don't need you to tell me that. I was only asking the question regarding how much was given to charity. I would suggest that they review how they operate everything. Any good non profit cause should spend less than 10% on operating costs. If not, they should be doing something else.
Justincase, I post because I care. Looks like you don't get involved too much in anything. I don't drink coffee or booze. Numbs and dumbs the mind. I am sure they served both at Redneck festival.

I addressed the diversity issue at the beginning of these comments. Now, TheJoker is attacking on a new low. . Last year’s donation was not as high as we would have liked, but please keep in mind this was a huge event and we are all volunteers! None of us are professional event planners so we have learned as we go.
I am on the Board for Redneck Fest. We had monthly meetings (which were open to the public) all year to discuss what we could do to improve. We learned a lot from last year’s event and made many changes to increase our donation, with our goal for this year being $10,000. Material for the stages, sound, lighting, paying out of town bands (local bands generously donated their time), electricity, portable toilets, etc. are tremendous expenses. There are still some donations being made so we do not have a total quite yet. However, we think we will at least be close to our goal.
The goal of Redneck Fest is simple: have a fun event that anyone can come to because it is free and raise money for Easter Seals Camp Wawbeek. We achieve that, perhaps not in a manner that suits your country club taste, but in a way that the rest of Janesville seems to enjoy and appreciate. Instead of insulting us because you do not have a clue what we’re about, why don’t you spend some of that energy on something positive? I suggest starting up a Snob Fest and raise some money for a good cause. I’m open-minded enough that I would stop in to check it out before I started judging your event.

TheJoker, I do have a life, a job, a few hobbies, family, many friends, and I also volunteer my time and go to many charitable events!! These are the reasons why I have only commented on articles 10 times (this one make 11) since I created my account in 2008. You also created your account the same year and have almost 900 posts...now who needs to get a life????
If you speak to your "friends" the way that you speak to people on this site, I would say that they probably just tolerate you when you are around and try to avoid you at all costs, and that is why you have the time to go on with your irrational rants day after day!!
You have not won anything except my utmost appreciation for proving my point about what a rude and ignorant person you can be!!
As far as the money that was donated last year, it was the PROCEEDS from the event. Since 2010 was the first year that it was public, there were expenses that will not be necessary every year!! (Also, I am not sure that the figure that you are giving is completely correct)
What is your charity of choice? What do you do for them?
Just let me know when you want to go out for that coffee, wine, or beer, to get that chip off of your shoulder...I am always more than willing to help out someone in need!!

After work this evening, I decided that I would do a little research on TheJoker. After scanning through some of the comments on other articles, I found that TheJoker has the right to say anything that he/she would like, while others that disagree with him/her are ignorant and should quit posting and go away. (I guess that no one else has rights?!)
Anyone that would like to read ALL 88 PAGES OF COMMENTS, the link is:

Second, he/she is a successful business person, a member of the Janesville Country Club, and has multiple properties. (I would think that a person that is as successful as you claim to be would be much more cordial to local people that you may do business with. You never know when someone will figure out who you are!!)
Anyway, I guess that my point is that if you can insist that all of the people that are involved in RNF are racist, then I can consider all of the people that are members of the Country Club as snobs?!!
NOTE: The comment about the snobs was sarcasm for the benefit of TheJoker only.
You have a chip on your shoulder!! Maybe a little education on your part about how to be social could help with that. I would be more than willing to sit and talk over a cup of coffee, glass of wine, or an ice cold beer!! Let me know!!!

Let's change it to Latin American Bell. And Polish sausage? North Central European sausage is much more appealing. How about Canadian Bacon? Northern North American Bacon. And anything German must be referred to as Bavarian. Don't forget what Hitler did. Dig a little deeper, Johnnyreb. There's more to the history of the term "Redneck" than you've found so far.
The point is, if Jack Herndon is as serious as he seems to be to raise funds for his favorite charity, why does he insist on using a name that many folks in this community find to b so offensive that they refuse to associate with it? Why would anyone want to intentionally offend their neighbors that way? He must have recognized this last year when he initially decided to change the name. Yet something led him to change his mind. What ever that was, it also keeps his fest from being all that it could be. As I said, what a pity.

For those of you whining about the name, do any of you know what the original meaning of the name is?????
Answer is NO!
Well here it is:
Word Origin & History
redneck
"cracker," 1893; attested 1830 in more specialized sense ("This may be ascribed to the Red Necks, a name bestowed upon the Presbyterians in Fayetteville," from Ann Royall, "Southern Tour I," p.148). According to various theories, red perhaps from anger, or from pellagra, but most likely from mule farmers' outdoors labor in the sun, wearing a shirt and straw hat, with the neck exposed.

We had a discussion about Redneck Fest last year here on GazetteXtra. I, and others, made the same point that
Fearandrhetoric4dummies made here. We related the history of the term "Redneck" and its racist roots. We had much the same reaction from many that can be seen below. We had other notable reactions too, particularly on facebook where there are no censors and decorum is optional (those facebook posts weren't child-friendly either!). Jack Herndon wrote on the Redneck Fest facebook account that he controls that he would change the name. His "friends" disapproved, urging him not to compromise. Time pasted. Memories faded. The Redneck Fest facebook access was restricted to friends only. (The prying eyes of the "haters" weren't welcome I suppose.) And of course, the anticipation of the name change (and I assume, the written promise of the change on facebook) were lost somewhere in cyber-space. So the name remains unchanged. What a pity.

First, to the poster who calls himself, "Joker", get a new name. I would suggest something more original and not try to copy someone else. For those that are in favor of promoting redneck gatherings, you make yourself(white people) look more foolish and promote hatred and intolerance to those of other races.
Pot smoking at the festival is not surprising. How many Confederate flags were there on display? Wait, you ask, what is wrong with Confederate flags? If you have to ask, then you prove my point. Why not call this festival, Family Fest or Janesville Fest?
Everyone seems to claim it is a great time for families and communities. If so, why not change the name?
This festival makes Janesville look bad. If you consider yourself a "redneck", then you are playing into the negative image that certain white people have. sara- I think that many of the "haters" have problems with the term "redneck" because it often is referred to white trash and racism. Not saying that it is completely warranted, buut you have to understand both sides. My only point was that its not a kid fiendly event and not very diverse. I say if you are going to have a community style festival, try to bring all sections of the community out to help. Not just Rednecks! There are thousands of minorities that would love to support a community run event helping out underpriviledged kids!

Joker, once again you know not of what you speak. This event had people from all walks of life attending, on our Board, in the bands and as vendors. We had black, white, hispanic, country club, biker, high income, low income, male, female, gay, and straight people involved in this event. The same can be said for the thousands of people who attended. As far as smoking pot, there were exactly two incidents of people trying to hide to do that and they were quickly found and told if that's what they wanted to do, they would have to leave the premises. This event was about two things: a lot of great people coming together to have a fun time and raising money for Easter Seals. That is exactly what we did.

A disgrace to Janesville? Are you kidding me? It seems to me Joker that you are the close minded myopic disgrace that judges people by labels. Gimme a break. Do you oppose St. Patrick's Day festivities? Now there's a holiday that is only designed for drinking. Do you have a problem with the Irish? Isn't everbody welcome to join in the fun? You would be very agitated if you lived in Milwaukee. Germanfest, Irishfest, Polishfest, Asianfest..... the list goes on. It's people like yourself who are the disgrace of Janesville. You that would rather badmouth a "labeled" group than see the positive that comes from an event such as this. I bet you were a big shot down on South Cherry Street when Ken Peterson brought the Klan to town.

Joker.. I recall you making the same comment last year, and you are still wrong. There were all races and ages!! As a matter of fact, comedian Gene Renfroe was on the main stage...guess what?? HE IS BLACK!!! and I and everyone at Redneck Fest are proud to call him our friend!!! We accept and respect everyone as long as they accept and respect us!! The term redneck simply means that we are always up to some kind of crazy shenanigans. We like to have a good time with our friends and enjoy the fact that we can do it in a way that can raise money for charity!!!

fearandrhetoric..there were plenty of porta potties there, maybe that is what you were smelling! If there was any "smoking" going on, it was very little. The security and all of the volunteers work too hard to allow anything to jeopardize the permits that are needed to have the event.

Hyper,I was there and do you know what pot smells like? plenty of it being smoked there.(Kind of smells like a porta potty) There is plenty of security at Alpine Valley too, are you going to tell me that nothing of that nature happens there?
look, I am glad that the proceeds go to charity and that in itself makes it a good event. Just not something I would EVER take my kids to.
While rednecks are generally viewed as racists, I dont think that its fair to label this as such. However I will say that there was not a whole lot of "diversity" afoot? Anyone else attending see much? Curious thats all.

Hardly a family event with all the pot smoking and vulgar language next to a childs play area...ignored or not. And not all the nieghbors support the event.

The event is hardly racist... And the proceeds go for a camp that changes the lives of disabled kids and their families. Three generations of my family have been chipping in to help the camp since they made such a positive impact on a family member's life.
.
Before stomping on the event, delve into the cause andn the people behind it, I think you'll find a very positive ending to your rant.

Frank Schultz.....you really painted this so bad! From your discription of the outfits, hair styles and body art, you tried so hard to paint it as a bad thing! From all this badness came 3 arrests???? You can at anytime stop at a bar or other events and have more! Frank hang it up, Go back to bashing the teachers...its whats you do best.
I know first hand how you do that. Whats next? Ronald McDonald house???

Seriously, this was another excellent year with some excellent bands, food, and people. I give great props to those who put this together and spend the time and effort to be on the RNF grounds for a month straight to get things set up. We've been partly involved in this event for the past 3 years and are happy to say that we will offer out backyard for as many years to come as needed!!

I'm sure that the people at this event have a higher IQ average than the anti-Walker protesters at the capital.

"she probably spent the night calling the police about fireworks"
.
I don't know about that......more and more people are realizing that laws really don't mean anything anyway so why call anybody?

Just because it is not your type of fun, is that reason to condem it. He has always had the support of his neighbors and all the money goes to a good cause. On the eve of our day of declaring independance, why not embrace their rights to FREEDOM and let them enjoy their fun, and help a good cause. They don't make you attend. I've never been there, but it sounds fun.
