Brandt gets Janesville Legion off to good start

PLOVER — Brady Brandt pitched Janesville’s American Legion baseball team to an opening-round win Thursday in the Plover Tournament.

Brandt scattered seven hits and did not walk a batter to lead Janesville to a 2-1 win over Sun Prairie.

Janesville (16-11) got the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Tanner Moe scored on Matt Fiedler’s squeeze bunt. Moe singled to start the inning, stole second and advanced to third on Riley Quinn’s sacrifice bunt.

Brandt, who will be a senior at Janesville Parker, improved to 3-0 on the season.

“Brady has been a real pleasant surprise for us on the mound,” Janesville coach Bob Schenck said. “He can throw his off-speed pitches for strikes, and that makes a big difference at this level.

“We made the plays behind him tonight, and that’s something we have struggled with the last couple of games. It was a good start to the tournament for us.”

Janesville plays Racine at three this afternoon and Manitowoc at 5:30.
