Janesville 13-year-olds deliver win, other scores

Janesville earned a berth in the Ohio Valley Regional with a 6-1 victory Sunday over Eau Claire to clinch the Babe Ruth 13-year-old state championship.

The Janesville 13s play either West Virginia or Northern Illinois at 2 p.m. Saturday in Matoon, Ill.

Janesville rallied for four runs in the fifth inning to seal the victory. Sam Carlson hit a bases-loaded RBI single. Chase Nyborg and Erik Woelfle reached on back-to-back bunt singles to score a run apiece to highlight the inning.

Janesville starter Connor Perkins scattered four hits through six innings and allowed one run to earn the victory. Reliever Zach Bailey blanked Eau Claire in the seventh to close out the victory.

Ohio Valley Regional play in the 9-year-olds Babe Ruth tournament was rained out Sunday.

Janesville defeated Crown Point (Ind.), 11-0, Saturday night to earn a No. 1 seed in single-elimination play that starts today. Janesville plays Southeast Kentucky, another No. 1 seed from a different pool at noon.

If Janesville wins, the team will play the winner of the Green Bay-Heights Point (Ky.) game at 6 p.m. Ten teams remain in the tournament.

Connor Clark had a three-run double, and Jared Emerson had two doubles in Janesville’s seven-run second inning Saturday night. Starter Mitchell Woelfle pitched three shutout innings and had a double to earn “Player of the Game” honors.

Crown Point did not get a hit in the game that was called after 3½ innings due to the mercy rule.
