A rough first inning sent Janesville to an 8-2 defeat to Jasper, Ind. Saturday in the 13-year-old Babe Ruth Ohio Valley Regional baseball tournament.

Jasper took off to a 6-0 lead in the first inning on five singles, a walk and a wild pitch.

“We had a bad inning and we paid for it,” coach Tom Davey said of Janesville’s first loss in tournament play. “That’s what happens in tournaments like this.’’

Janesville scored two runs on two hits, including Chase Nyborg’s double.

“After the first, we shut them down for four innings,” Davey said. “We just couldn’t get our bats going.’’

Janesville plays Edgewood, Ind., at 12:30 p.m. today. A victory puts Janesville in a game at 8 tonight, but a loss sends Janesville home.
