John Handel and his South squad were smart enough recognize Terry Nash needed the ball in his hands at the end.

The Elkhorn High coach leaned on the Wisconsin Lutheran point guard to rally the South to a 77-72 victory over the North in the Division 2 Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association boys all-star game Saturday afternoon at the UW Field House.

The Northern Michigan recruit delivered, as Nash had eight of his game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter. That included two three-point plays and a driving lay-up for the final points to finish off the North with 28 seconds left.

“We had to make a major comeback,” Nash said of the South, which trailed 47-37 early in the second half. “I was trying to force it and get it into the lane and try and make a play. My teammates were telling me to go after it.”

Nash’s second three-point play and subsequent jumper handed the South a 72-67 lead with 2:51 remaining.

Seymour’s Phil Romback, who matched Nash with a game-high 23 points, made two free throws to pull the North within 73-72 with 1:17 remaining. Reedsburg’s Chad Mazur then countered with two free throws for the South before Nash’s final layup closed out the win.

“In the second half, we finally found some combinations that we thought would work,” Handel said. “Mazur and Nash are both pretty special. So in the fourth quarter, we just said, ‘Let’s go through those guys.’ ”

Mazur finished with 19 points to help offset Romback’s start. The 6-foot, 7-inch Michigan Tech recruit made six of his first seven three-pointers to keep the North in front early in the game.

“It’s an all-star game, and our kids raised the most amount of money (for the Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer). So that’s what I am most proud about,” Handel said. “But I know they wanted to finish that off with a win.”
