Seventh-inning disaster helps Verona down Vikings

JANESVILLE — A disastrous seventh inning led to a disappointing loss for Janesville Parker’s baseball team here Thursday.

Second-place Verona scored six runs in the top of the seventh with the help of two Parker High errors to pull away for a 9-4 win in a Big Eight Conference game at Riverside Park.

Parker (9-7, 7-6) had tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth on Jake Welch’s RBI double, but Verona (10-3) surged ahead in the seventh.

“We haven’t had one bad inning like that all season, so that’s disappointing, especially at a key time of the game,” Parker coach Brian Martin said. “I would’ve really liked our chances had we held them in the seventh because Newmann was out of innings. They had to bring in a reliever.”

Kyle Johnson suffered the loss, despite allowing only four earned runs.

“Kyle was matching Newmann until we imploded in the seventh,” Martin said. “They hit Kyle, but he made pitches when he had to.”

Parker plays two nonconference games Saturday at Marshfield. The Vikings face Holmen at 1 p.m., followed by a game with host Marshfield at 4.
