— Walks came back to haunt UW-Whitewater’s softball team here Thursday.

Coe College scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on four straight walks in a 1-0 win over Whitewater in the opening round of the NCAA Division III double-elimination regional tournament.

Whitewater (26-11) plays Benedictine (Ill.) in an elimination game at noon today.

Warhawk pitcher Jessica Stang (19-6) allowed only one hit in six innings but walked four straight batters in the fourth in suffering the loss.

Coe’s Ashlee Simon (26-2) also held the Warhawk hitters in check. Simon allowed only two singles and struck out 12 in the complete-game victory. The two hits marked the fewest by Whitewater since being no-hit by Messiah College in the first game this season.

In other games Thursday, top-ranked Linfield (Ore.) defeated Anderson (Ind.), 10-0; Washington University of St. Louis beat Fontbonne (Mo.), 3-2; and host Central College beat Benedictine, 12-7.
