Another Delavan-Darien school board member quits
DELAVAN A second member of the Delavan-Darien School Board has resigned.
Joey Torkelson, who has served on the board since 2006, resigned Tuesday.
Her resignation comes less than two weeks after the resignation of Carol Murphy.
Torkelson was not available for comment Wednesday.
The school board and administration have been in conflict with a parents' group since the summer. The parents' group is concerned with a variety of issues including teacher retention, the atmosphere in the schools, discipline and curriculum changes.
Murphy wasn't specific about her reasons for resigning, but she did say that she believed that as a board member, she had given what she could to her school district and community.
The district is now soliciting applications for both positions. For Murphy's seat, applicants must be from Delavan Township. For Torkelson's seat, applicants can be from Sugar Creek, Richmond, Bradford or Darien townships.
Applicants should submit a letter listing the qualities they would bring to the board, what they think are the major issues facing the district and how the candidate thinks the issues could be addressed.
Letters must be received by 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3 and should be mailed to "Board Vacancy," 324 Beloit St., Delavan, WI 53115.
