— Brian Olson claimed a narrow victory against Jim Taylor in the Elkhorn City Council District 6 race Tuesday.

The open seat was created because incumbent Julie Taylor did not seek re-election.

New election rules could change the outcome of the race. The rules require that late-arriving absentee ballots postmarked by April 3 must be counted if they arrive by Friday.

Olson, 35, applauded his opponent.

"I appreciate Jim Taylor's commitment and dedication to the campaign and the community," he said. "I look forward to serving with my new peers as we work together to promote Elkhorn as a successful city."

Olson, a self-employed independent manufacturing representative, said he will focus on budget issues.

"I want to keep taxes low without having to cut services, and I know that's a difficult thing to do," Olson said. "One way to accomplish that is to review the programs we have and look for areas where we can maximize our potential in such areas as personnel and contracts."

Economic development also is a priority for Olson.

"We need to do whatever we can to make sure we keep our existing businesses and industry from leaving as they grow and expand."
