— Janesville baseball was well represented Saturday when UW-Whitewater swept UW-Stout in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Prucha Field.

Janesville Parker graduate and Warhawk senior Matt Beyer was just one of the hitting stars for Whitewater in the 10-6 and 11-3 victories over the Blue Devils.

Beyer went 2-for-5 in each of the wins while leading off. Beyer scored a run and drove one in during the first game, and then scored twice and drove in two in the second game. He hit his fourth homer of the season.

After losing senior leaders Jeff Donovan, Riley Tincher and Daniel Putnam from last year, Warhawk coach John Vodenlich is depending on seniors such as Beyer to play a major role.

“We have a talented team,” Vodenlich said of the Warhawks, who went to 15-6 overall and 6-2 in the WIAC with the two wins Saturday. “Matt is a senior captain. We’ve spent a lot of time talking and working with him the last three years.

“He has the capability and desire to lead. He’s a quiet guy who leads by example. You’re always looking for those type of guys.”

Joining Beyer among the Warhawk stars Saturday were Michael Gonzalez, a sophomore catcher out of Delavan-Darien High, and Tyler Teubert, a freshman shortstop out of Janesville Parker.

Gonzalez caught the first game and went 2-for-4, which included his second homer of the season.

Teubert played in the second game and went 2-for-3, including a homer and a double, with three runs scored and an RBI.

“That might have been his first collegiate start,” Vodenlich said of Teubert, who graduated from Parker in 2010. “His attitude is awesome, and he has a good body and hands. He also has power, which he showed.”

The visiting Blue Devils featured two Janesville products.

Ben Yaucher, a junior out of Craig High, started both games for Stout. The first baseman went 2-for-6, with a pair of RBIs in both games. He had two sacrifice flies in the opener.

Charlie Meyer was the Blue Devils’ designated hitter in both games. The Craig High graduate and Stout freshman went 3-for-8 with two runs scored and an RBI. His homer in the fifth inning in the first game, along with Jake Duske’s blast right after Meyer, got the Blue Devils to within 4-3.

Meyer doubled in the second game.

The Warhawks have a fourgame winning streak. Vodenlich is encouraged with the development of the team, which had questions with the starting lineup and pitching staff due to the graduation losses from last season.

“We spent the first half of this season answering those questions,” Vodenlich said. “We’re slowing coming together.”

Matthew Roberts came within one out of pitching a complete game in the opener. Roberts (2-1) allowed eight hits and walked two while striking out five. Quintin Zander came on to get the final out.

The Warhawks had 13 hits in the first game, led by Ryan Leavitt’s 3-for-3 performance . Whitewater also had 13 hits in the nightcap.

Zander got the win in relief, pitching 4 2/3 shutout innings. “Our pitching is getting better and better,” Vodenlich said. The teams are scheduled to play another doubleheader starting at noon today.
