JANESVILLE Janesville Craig’s boys and girls track and field teams finished second at Friday night’s Cougar Relays at chilly Monterey Stadium.
Middleton won the boys team title with 122 points, while Sun Prairie’s girls were champions with 124.
Craig’s boys were second with 110.5, while Janesville Parker was third with 95. The Cougar girls finished with 114.5, while Parker was sixth with 58.
Craig’s girls won the 800 sprint and 800 relay, while Alli Calkins (long jump) and Ashley Pohlman (triple jump) had top individual performances.
“We did about as well as I thought we would,” said Craig girls coach Mark Marsden, who was coaching his last home meet at Monterey Stadium. Marsden is retiring at the end of the school year.
“The weather wasn’t the greatest, but I thought our girls handled the conditions well. Sun Prairie’s got an awfully nice team, and we don’t quite have the depth that we had a year ago. Still, I was very pleased with our effort.”
The Craig boys were led by the 9/10 medley relay team which set a record. Craig senior Calvin Coleman had the top mark in both the long jump and triple jump.
“Every track coach talks about progressing during the season, and we’re no different,” Craig coach Jeff Deininger said. “We had some pretty good times tonight considering the running conditions weren’t the greatest, so I’m encouraged about what we can do as a team as the weather gets nicer down the road.
“We knew coming into this meet what the strengths of our team were, and maybe, we found some other areas that we’re going to score points in, as well.”
Trever Steinke had the top throw in the shot put for the Parker boys, while Shawn Bohler had the fastest time in the 300 intermediate hurdles.
“We’re all still standing, that’s the most important thing,” Parker boys coach Joe Dye. “We just want to keep improving and get everyone healthy.”
Kristin Zeilinger tied for first in the pole vault to lead the Parker girls.
