Matt's Dog House is moving downtown

JANESVILLE Matt Kealy is moving his hot dog business downtown and is betting the change in location and expansion of hours will boost his business.
Matt's Dog House will open at 101 E. Milwaukee in Prospect 101, the former Helgesen Building. His new space is located between Time Out Pub & Eatery and The Looking Glass and will open sometime in May.
Kealy will close the restaurant at its current location at 1026 N. Washington St.
"We feel we can serve more people downtown with the amount of business in the immediate area," Kealy said.
The spot is centrally located, next to the parking ramp and will cater to both downtown businesses and after-bar crowds, he said. It also will be open Saturdays during the Janesville Farmers Market.
Kealy will serve food into the early morning hours on weekends. Most bars in the area quit serving food at 9 p.m., Kealy said.
Now, Matt's Dog House is open from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. At the new location, it will stay open until 3 a.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
"We would hope if we add more hours, we'll see an increase in business," Kealy said. "I think a quick-serve restaurant is going to be an amenity to the downtown."
The downtown area only needs to overcome the perception that it lacks parking, Kealy said. The reality is that parking is abundant.
"I think downtown's come a long way," Kealy said. "I think downtown is going to continue to prosper with time."
Besides hot dogs, menu items will include Italian beef sandwiches, wraps and French fries.

Marco Glissen cold afford to provide high quality food when he had it, he never paid his taxes! I will give Matt's Dog House a chance. If the service is bad/and or Matt can't smile & be genuinely appreciative for his customers, I'll simply go elsewhere. I pray that won't be the case.

Boy, the JPD will be camped outside that parking ramp come bar time now. Waiting just a little longer for the ones grabbing a bite. Like fish in a barrel.

I ate at Fanks on Friday and it is much better than Matt's. Service was with a smile. I hope Matt does a better job on the city council than he does with his business. This could be bad for Matt if he does not improve.

katie- nope not 300 lb.
I read articles over and over how people wont go downtown because the have to park then walk. It is farhter away to park at the mall and get to your place. Sorry I was being general and commenting that way because I thought it WAS the usual OMG I cannot walk two blocks to get my food.
Look for the downtown comments and you will see what I mean.

"This is actually a return to the downtown area, as the Deli Dog House started on the corner of Parker & Centerway, didn't it?"
Yes you are correct. Who owned it then. back in 1997- got some dogs there when bro home for wedding.
"Most of the bar crowd that hit Denny's and Perkins are less rowdy and less drunk in order to take their drunk butts all the way to those places."
wow you are confused.
to drunk to drive all that way- NO they are drunk and DO drive all that way.
"What I miss is Court Street Cafe. Patty melts, prices, and the staff were the best."
was is Westside or something-
again- GROSS- gross in there, dirty, stick, tar fulled room.

I was a Dog House customer for many years, but the place went steadily downhill over the years after Bill sold the original place imo. That was when it was in its prime.
I go to Beef Bros.now for that type of food. I like their attitude and the whole set up lots better.

Thank you grandprixgirl for sticking up to me to such a bully like Frogger. I am not fat and lazy I have a life and when I want a quick lunch I dont want to walk that distance and come home with cold food. I was simply commenting on what most people seem to be agreeing with me on. You are probally the lazy 300 # overweight video gamer sitting and eating your bag of chips while picking on me.

Brilliant idea, this is another component along with some of the good bars downtown that can make it a real city down there. I am not of the age for bar hopping but I understand the importance of a city this size to have options to those that do, adding this to the area and timeframe is an added bonus. Good job!

The soggy cold fries and a hotdog plus the higher prices do not appeal to me as an individual but I am sure a few drunks will like it if they have any cash left. As for parking, the ramp is packed in the day and at later night. The day walk not to bad but late night I wouldn't walk it with some of the violent drunks. Kealy will do fine at the new spot but how will his workers fare having to deal with that bar crowd will be another story. Those two bars are notorious for fighting now the after bar rowdy drunk can have food fights. Most of the bar crowd that hit Denny's and Perkins are less rowdy and less drunk in order to take their drunk butts all the way to those places. What I miss is Court Street Cafe. Patty melts, prices, and the staff were the best.

grandprixgirl....I respectfully disagree. When's the last time you went to either Perkins or Denny's at bar time? At the "peak" of bar time, you have to wait for a table - and sometimes a long wait. Where do you think a lot of these people are coming from? The bars downtown, no doubt. I'm sure many of them will opt for a bite to eat at a location near where they already are.

craigholmes seems to be the only one to get the big picture. The bar crowd may be rowdy and loud but they will spend lots of money for after bar food. Those late hours on bar nights will support the restaurant. The lunch crowd and walk in traffic will be the profit.
.
Those that are lamenting the closed building on Washington Street should feel free to move in and open their own restaurant. Be aware that a mexican restaurant, the original hot dog stand owners, and now Matt Kealy have found the location undesirable from a profit and loss stand point.

Lower food quality seems to be a pattern with Kealy purchased restaurants. We experienced the same thing at the airport. We had gone there as a family for years but 2 visits after Kealy took over, we have not been back. He does a good job of advertising, but what made the place a success in the first place is lost.

Frogger--- how on earth did you get, from her post, that she was "lazy"???
she mentioned that parking, walking, getting the food and getting back to her car could result in cold food. (I agree). But...nowhere does she state that she doesnt want to walk that far...
In fact, nobody, including myself, has made any reference to having to walk any distance and being lazy about it.
More people seem to be complaining about his FOOD..
I think weve eaten there a couple times, so I cant really vouch for the food,
Hes targeting a different type of person. More power to him, but Im guessing the bar crowd at midnight will probably not be what hes thinking it will be.

grandprix- I picked on Katie just like all the other lazy people in this town. The mall stays busy but if you go "downtown" oh my you cannot park RIGHT out front of anything. You cannot park right out front of anything in the mall either but that seems okay to people. Cozy Inn is plenty busy. WOW how do they do it all those steps!!??

Many of you are very funny. Anyone so clueless as to think he is trying to cater to the general Janesville population is fooling themseleves. 20% of his volumes will be between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm and the remainder will be between 11:00 pm and 3:00 am. This is a profit driven decision, I hope that concept doesn't offend anyone.

I quit going to the dog house several years ago the quality of the food went down hill drastically, I gave them a couple of chances but the quality never went back up, between cold italian beef sandwiches and fries, and Chicago style dogs make without the poppyseed bun and a regular hotdog and not a Vienna Beef dog not a good combination. Matt has lost my families business for good.

Matt has been involved with the restaurant business practically his whole life. Has also been successful at it. He will do just fine and better with the new location. There is large lunch crowd of business folks downtown and yes, the bar crowd. It's about business. A risk many are willing to criticize, but are not willing to take themselves.

I hope that Matt looks at improving the quality of service and the food when it opens. I ate Kealy's and the Doghouse in the last month and it was not the same as it use to be. This could be a gold mine if it is done right. Make it your own and go for it. Stay away from premade stuff and you will succeed. I also want to say that people will walk the distance if the quality is there.

Too bad!! I hope he reads this, although its too late. He wont make it down there---I know, I know, I will get all the bar people posting that Im wrong, that things make it down there..and thats true..SOME do..most dont. He will lose a big chunk of his business by moving there. And Frogger...when you "went after" K_atie... why? Shes right. First, he took menu items off that were a big hit..and secondly...the average person ISNT going to park in a parking garage..walk to the place and back. Not nowadays. Not someone in a hurry home, on a rainy or snowy night. A drive thru window is critical for a restaurant. Hes changing the crowd hes targeting. At the old location, it was families...downtown...its the bar crowd. Plain and simple. For his sake, I hope he makes it. But...I give it a year tops.

chelleandlou - Parking should never be an issue, there is a 3 story parking ramp attached to the building with a partially enclosed walkway right to the back door of where this place is moving to. Parking dont get much better.... you can go in the pouring rain and not get a drop of water on you.

I thought the Deli Dog House had some of the best hot dogs and french fries around as well as broasted chicken. After since Matt bought it the quality and service has gone down as well as many menu items removed. Im hoping a new location well improve the quality. However its not easy for anyone else to just stop in and have lunch. I really don't want to park in the parking garage walk there get my lunch and than back to my car and than back home. By that time it well be cold.

I think the Italian beef sandwiches were the best sandwiches for the money ANYWHERE! The last time I got one, the beef was dry and had more fat in it than any sandwich I have ever gotten there. Anytime someone tries a different vendor to save a little money quality inevitably suffers. I wish they were made the way they were when it was on Parker drive. I quit going to the Dog House. I still go to eat at the airport though.

Matt...as a local business it is wise to provide services to the local residents. It is just as wise for local residents to to use and purchase goods and services locally when ever possible. You might consider this when hiring contractors. Good luck at your new location. I do practice what I preach and have made purchases at your restaurant and most likely will continue.
