Craig, Parker soccer teams open with wins
CUDAHY Craig High launched the 2012 boys soccer season with a 2-0 nonconference victory Tuesday over Cudahy/St. Francis.
Peyton Wunn and freshman Hozai Ceballos scored for Craig.
Craig coach Charlie Friedrich is counting on seven returning starters to give the Cougars a boost.
"The kids have been together since last season and we are looking for good results," Friedrich said. "This could be the team that advances as far as any soccer team at Craig if we play up to our ability.''
Friedrich wants Craig to play the same way it did in its season-opening victory.
"Cudahy got one shot on goal," Friedrich said. "The whole game we stressed to tighten up the defense.''
Craig goalkeeper Keegan Leckey posted two saves.
Friedrich said Craig controlled the ball against Cudahy/St. Francis.
"Possession of the ball, this is how the Middletons and Veronas play," Friedrich said. "We may have had the ball 65 percent of the time.''
Friedrich lauded sweeper Chino Chavez and Erik Tollessrud for shutting down Cudahy/St. Francis attack.
"Chavez had a monster game," Friedrich said. "It's the best game I've seen our sweeper play, nothing got behind him.
"Tollessrud was every thing you want in a stopper," Friedrich said. "He was dominating. Cudahy's leading scorer didn't get off a shot.''
The Cougars have seniors Connor Sheedy and Ryne McKee, juniors Dan Swale, Nole Ceballos and sophomores Brady March and Ian Reinicke returning to starting positions this season.
"You have to go through the pain of finding out what kind of team you have," Friedrich said. "Getting a 2-0 shutout in the first game is a good step.''

-- Parker 8, Edgerton 0—The Vikings equaled last year's win total with a convincing non-conference win in the season-opener on Tuesday night.
Tyler Weilbrenner and Pedro Arvizo each notched a hat trick as Parker jumped all over the first-year Edgerton program.
"It was really a nice team effort tonight," Parker coach Andy Holmes said. "We wanted to focus tonight on our team shape and our defense, and I thought we were able to do that.
"We moved the ball well all game and made things happen.
"It's nice to see another school (Edgerton) in our area get a program off the ground, and it was good to see us come out and take care of business."
Holmes thinks the Vikings are headed in the right direction in trying to right the ship. Parker returns a number of starters, including two potential Division I college players in Weilbrenner and defenseman Quinten Nauer.
"Tyler is the most dominating player I've had since I've been here," Holmes said. "He knows the game well and is a year-round player.
"Nauer is the fastest kid on the team by far, and at 6-foot-3, has great size and athleticism for someone that big."
Holmes also singled out Arvizo, sophomore Osmond Espinoza, senior Jonathan Trejo, senior Mason Jensen and senior Jon Fillion as players that will be crucial to the team's chances of climbing the Big Eight Conference ladder. Parker finished 1-22 overall last season.
Parker plays at the Beloit Invitational starting this Friday.
