Interstate project could expand

— Traffic count projections justify expanding Interstate 90/39 to four lanes in each direction through Janesville, state transportation officials said.

Original plans called for the widening of the Interstate from two lanes in each direction to three lanes from the Illinois state line to the Beltline in Madison.

Department of Transportation project manager Steve Marshall said 20-year traffic projections for the Interstate segment through Janesville warrant four lanes in each direction.

Federal highway officials, he said, suggested that the segment be expanded now rather than later.

Marshall and other transportation officials will be in Rock County on Tuesday to discuss one of the

three segments in the expansion project.

Tuesday's meeting will serve as an introduction to the project's south segment, a 12-mile stretch running from the Illinois state line to County O, just south of Janesville.

Upcoming meetings will address the central and northern segments of the six-year project, which will expand the Interstate from two lanes in each direction to three lanes starting in 2015.

Marshall said the segment with four lanes in each direction would run from the Avalon Road interchange to Highway 26 on Janesville's northwest side. All other segments of the expansion project are expected to remain at three lanes in each direction.

"Tuesday's meeting will really be the first time we've presented this four-lane proposal," Marshall said.

Officials on Tuesday will present preliminary design information for planned improvements, which includes the complete reconstruction and expansion of the Interstate, as well as interchange reconstructions at Interstate 43, County S and Avalon Road.

Marshall said the public is encouraged to attend the meeting, provide input and ask questions. Maps showing the proposed improvement alternatives also will be on display.

The worst part so far has been the construction of the bridges. Those pile drivers really rattle a house!

Led... I get why you are where you are--makes sense. By the way, if your house is the one I think it is, I used the same tile guy you used for your fireplace after your fire :)

Hope the interstate work doesn't disrupt you.

Frusion. In answer to your question, no. We didn't even think about the interstate, only that we found a house that we could afford with the layout we liked. We were buying our second house and figured that we would only be there for at most five years. Seventeen years later, here we are.

When we were looking it was wintertime and the sound wasn't that bad. Now, completely different. The only plus we've had is the overwhelming number of calls to 911 when we had a house fire four years ago. By the time the police and fire dept. were there I had only been awake for about two minutes! This was at 2:30 in the morning by the way!

Why do it right the first time? Then we wouldnt have a continuous place to put the orange barrels. Just about the time they finish the 3 lanes it will be time to start the 4th lane.... Job security...its the way its always been.

Here we go blaming the current governor, what a clueless comment. It started under Doyle's watch, and it needs to be done, and I don't care about the enviromental impact. Saving lives is more important than anything else, and we drive the interstate alot.

So all the bridge work to make them accomodate 3 lanes in the past couple years is now just wasted money, that makes perfect sense.

Sounds good to me. Do the 4 now instead of three now and one more in a couple years.

Its been in a continual state of expansion ever since I can remember... I've been driving for 20 years they are always working on it.

Good point FRUSION - Builders continue to build new homes along the Interstate and it must be really loud. I guess it does not bother many people.

Question for those that live along the interstate. The road right of way is what it is. Even adding 6 lanes each direction, they do not need to acquire more road right of way--the lanes will fit in the land they have. My question is, unless you've lived in your home since the 1950's, did you at all consider the road noise when you decided to move next to a highway? I consider living next to a highway no different than living next to a dump or a farm and then complaining of the smell.

Riding it everyday to work it is needed now more than later. I would love to see four lanes.

Something needs to be done with the Racine St exit and on ramps more sooner than this project, as someone who travels the interstate every day and is almost ran off the road trying to get on, that is one deadly area that has needed to be addressed for years!

I agree with proartist regarding the need for, “more efficient, clean and accessible mass transit!”
Unfortunately, we are stuck with a governor who is clueless.

No matter how many lanes are added, traffic congestion will simply continue to grow. Did expanding the number of lanes in ANY other city ever end the accidents and congestion? It's time to get SERIOUS about more efficient, clean and accessible mass transit!

Well said gwendt. No wait- I take that back. I have been suggesting that they make it 4 lanes in each direction since the 3 lane thing was introduced many years ago. Typically lanes are added after it's too late. If we make it 4 lanes in each direction now, it will be way cheaper than adding 1 lane now and another lane in 7 years.

This should prove very interesting. I wonder how close this will push ith interstate closer to the houses within the city? Also, what about the sound barrier that is to be built? I certainly hope that it gets built befor all of this gets started.

Four lanes is a great idea! Three lanes will be at capacity the day they are built. Four lanes should make driving much nicer and it will be done some day anyways.

Yes but this is also one very dangerous stretch of highway as I am sure you have noticed in the news quite often. It is needed hands down.

Where's the money coming from and at what point do we say enough is enough when it comes to the negative ecological impact! All the expansions in roads won't be needed once the land is all ate up by concrete and contamination. Besides the roads we already have aren't taken care of like they should be not to mention plowing when we get snow!
