— A scam targeting homeowners and people who live alone is afoot in Walworth County, according to the sheriff's office.

Two parties reported falling victim to the scam this week, according to a news release issued Wednesday morning by the Walworth County Sheriffs Office.

In both incidents, the thieves pulled pickup trucks into the residents' driveways and requested to paint the house, clean the yard, seal the driveway or inspect lightning rods.

While one huckster occupied the residents with talk, a partner entered the home and stole valuables.

The pickup trucks were described as a gray 2003 Chevy Silverado with a ladder rack and a newer model Dodge three-quarter ton pickup.

The thieves appear to choose their victims so they have easy access to the home, according to the sheriff's office.

Legitimate businesses sometimes perform such services, but they generally do not go door-to-door to generate business.

The Walworth County Sheriffs Office requests that anybody witnessing suspicious activity in their neighborhood to call (262) 741-4400 and to share information regarding the scam with neighbors and relatives.
