All three incumbents seeking to stay on Janesville School Board

JANESVILLE — All three Janesville School Board members who are up for re-election in April have committed to running again.

Karl Dommershausen, Kristin Hesselbacher and Peter Severson told The Gazette they will run for three-year terms on the nine-member board.

Others interested in running have until Jan. 2 to qualify for the April 2 ballot.

Dommershausen, 70, of 2419 Plymouth Ave., thinks he has earned a second term and is still a productive board member.

Dommershausen said he wants to make sure the board keeps focused on students, and he said he has remained nonpartisan in a highly charged political atmosphere.

"I think the two extremes need to work together much more strongly and I think I can be a part of that," Dommershausen said.

Dommershausen said he wants to "standardized clothing, at least at the grade school level," and to improve student achievement.

Hesselbacher, 44, of 1210 N. Martin Road, said it's important for her to continue in a second term because of upcoming issues, including high school redesign, the employee handbook, an international-education initiative and a new way of evaluating teachers that is in the works.

"I hope to continue to advocate for our students and for our residents who believe a strong school system is an asset to our community," Hesselbacher said.

Severson, 43, of 1817 Wesley Ave., said he believes his four years of board experience make him the right person for the job.

"I've invested a lot of time and effort into it, and I still think we have to get the district going in a better direction," Severson said. "We have lot of work to do."

Candidates can obtain the required papers between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays from Debra Blazer, assistant board clerk, at the Educational Services Center, 527 S. Franklin St.

Candidates must file papers by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, at the Educational Services Center. Papers must include nomination petitions with at least 100 but no more than 200 signatures.

If a primary is needed, it would be held Feb. 19. The new terms begin April 22.
