Warhawks, Pointers collide Wednesday night
WHITEWATER UW-Whitewater and visiting UW-Stevens Point clash in a dual of Division III top 10 ranked and undefeated men's basketball teams at 7 tonight at Williams Center.
Whitewater, ranked No. 2 in the d3hoops.com poll, and No. 6 Stevens Point each are 7-0 on the season, with the Warhawks (3-0) holding a half-game lead on the Pointers (2-0) in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Conference.
The Warhawks must deal with the Pointers' one-two punch of Tyler Tillema, who is averaging 27 points in the conference and 20 points for the season, and Clayton Heuer, who is averaging 15 points overall and 12 in the conference.
Tillema has made 50 of 101 field goal attempts, 8 of 23 three-point shots and 30 of 34 free throws. Heuer is 37 of 56 from the field, including 3 of 5 from three-point range and 30 of 35 from the foul line.
Tillema has led Stevens Point in scoring in four of its last five games, including a season-high 34 points against UW-Superior. Heuer scored a season-high 20 points in Point's nonconference victory over Augustana last Saturday.
The Warhawks counter with balance scoring from five players, including Quardell Young who has averaged 12.4 per game overall, Beloit High graduate KJ Evans at 11.6, Luke Knoble at 11.3, Darnell Harris at 10.6 and Eric Bryson, an Elkhorn graduate, at 10.4 points per game.
Evans is coming off a double-double in Saturday's victory over Eau Claire, when he had 21 points and 11 rebounds.
The teams' overall scoring statistics could not get closer. Whitewater has scored 534 points and Point 536. Each team has allowed 445 points.
