Bluebirds collect victory at West
The Janesville Bluebirds put together their most complete game of the season Thursday night.
Janesville's high school boys co-op hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period and coasted to a 6-1 Big Eight Conference win over Madison West.
"We were on the road against West, which has as good of team as they have in a few years," said Bluebird coach John Mauermann. "It was nice to jump out front."
Clay Simonson and Connor Perkins scored first-period goals, with Perkins' power-play goal coming just 25 seconds before the period ended.
Winn Lyons and Perkins added two more power-play scores in the second period, before Mike Money made it 5-0 with a breakaway goal over the shoulder of West goalie Henry Cutting with just 33 seconds left in the period.
Mauermann said it was a credit to his team that it was able to produce those two last-minute goals.
"To steal those two periods is a feather in our cap," he said.
Dane Tyler scored the Bluebirds' final goal.
Connor Perkins had two goals and an assist. Michael MacDougall had an assist and made 10 saves in goal, while Tyler Lewis added six saves.
"When you get the puck to the net, good things happen," Mauermann said.
The Bluebirds, 2-3 in the Big Eight and 2-5 overall, play a nonconference game at Fond du Lac at 5 p.m. Saturday.
