Bill Harried of Bill’s Carpet Service in Madison and a helper were laying new flooring Monday in what is slated to become the Avenue Grill in the coming weeks. The family restaurant is occupying the site of the former Ponderosa Steakhouse.
JANESVILLE A new chapter in the restaurant history of Milton Avenue will begin later this year or early next.
Sadri Shabani plans to open Avenue Grill at 2020 Milton Ave., the former home of Ponderosa Steakhouse.
Ponderosa closed in August after 39 years of business in Janesville.
Shabani bought the building in September and started renovations that will include a bar.
"It will be a family restaurant and bar," he said. "It will be American cuisine, everything from eggs and omelets to sandwiches and steaks."
Shabani said the restaurant would be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., 365 days a year.
"We're totally remodeling it, putting in a bar and closing off the kitchen to save on heat," he said.
He said that because the restaurant will be open 16 hours a day, he would have a staff of 20 to 25 people.
Some of those will be former Ponderosa employees, he said.
Ponderosa closed when its lease expired with the property's owner, who is selling the building to Shabani on a land contract.

Another typical meat and potatoes restaraunt. Yeah, that's what we need. More mediocrity.

Sax - maybe sometimes the family likes to eat together in a place they can relax and be waited on after they have already worked a zillion hours that week.

Liquor license issues tend to be with "to go" establishments. If one wanted to open a liquor store or a store with a liquor department, usually that is where the "we only allow so many licenses" comes in. Are we to presume this will be similar to Ground Round? Looking forward to trying this new place out.

So somebody on a blog before stated they thought Golden Coral. This might be a relative of owner of Eagle Inn. Eagle Inn has good food but like a yummy drink with it. Good news.
