Mather, Kurtz win Big Eight titles

MADISON — Reaching the 30-win plateau was the season-long goal for Nate Mather and Zak Kurtz.

The Janesville Craig seniors moved a step closer Saturday by winning individual titles at the Big Eight Conference wrestling tournament.

Mather dominated in winning the 182-pound title, while Kurtz avenged a dual-meet loss to Madison La Follette’s Spencer Lowrey in winning the 195-pound crown.

Sun Prairie won the team title Saturday with 236 points, while Middleton was second. Craig finished third with 215, and Janesville Parker was eighth with 102.

“I think Sun Prairie, Middleton and us all had our chances to win this today,” Craig coach Mark Mullen said. “Sun Prairie had a couple of kids step up for them and that was the difference.

“But for Nate and Zak to win conference titles as seniors is a big deal. Their No. 1 goal coming into the year was to become part of our elite 30-win club at Craig, and they got a lot closer today.”

Kurtz beat Lowrey, 4-0, in the title match at 195. Mather pinned Middleton’s Wyatt Cory at 1:13 of the first period in the championship match at 182.

Craig freshman Airk Furseth reached the title match at 106 but lost a tough 6-5 decision to La Follette’s Pedro Silver, who won with a late takedown.

Parker’s top finisher was freshman Gage Burdick, who was third at 106 pounds.

Craig and Parker begin tournament competition Saturday at the WIAA Division 1 Stoughton Regional.
