Heading to state: Janesville, area boys among extra qualifiers
A number of area boys swimmers qualified for the WIAA’s Division 1 and Division 2 state meets this weekend based on times set at sectional meets Saturday.
Only the sectional champion in each event qualified for the state meet, but 18 extra qualifiers were added for each event in Division 1, along with 12 in Division 2.
Janesville will have four entrants in Saturday’s Division 1 meet at the UW-Natatorium in Madison.
Parker senior Kyle Amundson is an extra qualifier in the 100 breaststroke, and junior Tommy Dvorak qualified in the 100 butterfly.
The Vikings’ 200 medley relay team of senior Brandon Jackson, junior Spencer Twining, Dvorak and Amundson, which set a school record at Saturday’s Middleton Sectional, earned a state berth with a time of 1:43.00.
Janesville Craig will be represented at state by the 200 medley relay team of junior Nick Krueger, junior Troy Thornton, senior Mark Parker and junior Tad Martin. The relay team qaulified with a sectional time of 1:44.19.
Milton High’s swim team also fared well with extra qualifiers. The Red Hawks will be represented in six additional events at Friday night’s Division 2 state meet. Spencer Mattox, who won the 100 breaststroke at the Baraboo Sectional, also qualified in the 200 individual medley. Jack Lunaas also qualified in two events for Milton thanks to Saturday times in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
Fort Atkinson’s Avery Kan also qualified in two events for the Division 2 state meet.
