The boys are back!

Milton High’s fabulous foursome of John Wells, Garrett Whitehead, Ian Johnson and Landon Shea is headed back to the WIAA state wrestling tournament.

Wells, Whitehead and Johnson, won individual titles at Saturday’s Division 1 Sun Prairie Sectional, while Shea finished runner-up.

Janesville Craig’s Zak Kurtz also finished second at the Sun Prairie Sectional to advance to state.

Johnson is a defending state champion and has been nearly untouchable this season. The senior ran his record to 40-0 by cruising to the 182-pound title.

Wells, a former state champ, won the 113-pound class to improve to 40-4.

Whitehead, a state runner-up a year ago, ran his record to 37-7 this season with a 9-2 win over Joe Nelson in the title bout at 132 pounds.

Shea lost in the title bout at 126 pounds to Dominic Garcia of Kenosha Tremper, but bounced back with a second-place wrestleback pin over Beloit’s Pierce Andrews.

Kurtz, a senior, improved his season record to 35-7 with his second-place finish at 195 pounds. He lost in the title match to Stoughton’s Dillon Dewey, but advanced to state by virtue of his 5-4 win over third-place finisher Robert Johnson of Lake Geneva Badger.

“Zak wrestled really well today, even in his loss,” Craig coach Mark Mullen said. “Really, every kid we had wrestle today did a nice job. I think everybody that we lost to today eventually advanced to state except at one weight class.

“And our heavyweight, Dakota Pearson, got to 30 wins today, giving us a school-record six wrestlers with 30 wins in the same season.”

Badger’s Randy Shine won a sectional title at 138, while teammate Eddy Ruzga was the champion at 220. The Badgers’ Tom Cychner and Tayler Hildebrandt advanced by finishing second at 285 and 182, respectively.

Elkhorn’s Jake Stilling won the 170-pound class at Sun Prairie, and teammates Kyle Mountford and Dakota Johnson were second at 145 and 220, respectively.

Fort Atkinson’s Brett Bowar advanced to state by finishing second at 126 pounds at the Division 1 Waukesha West Sectional.

Brodhead/Juda’s Colden wins sectional title

Brodhead/Juda’s Hunter Colden continues to pile up the wins.

The junior improved to 41-3 for the season by winning the 170-pound title at the Division 2 sectional title at Richland Center.

Edgerton’s Adam Carlson was second at 195 pounds at Richland Center in qualifying for state, while Orfordville Parkview’s Justin Graham advanced in Division 3 after finishing third at the Mineral Point Sectional.

Delavan-Darien will have four wrestlers competing at the Division 2 state meet, led by unbeaten Marcus Hudson. The senior improved to 44-0 after cruising to the 182-pound title at the Campbellsport Sectional. Hudson will be joined at state by teammates Austin Schwarz (106), Kiefer Bennett (145) and Kyndle Bennett (152), who all finished third at the sectional meet.

Walworth Big Foot’s Garrett Cary improved to 26-0 by winning the 285-pound title at Campbellsport.
