— The Milton Red Hawks soared on the first day of the WIAA Division 1 state individual wrestling tournament.

Milton's John Wells, Garrett Whitehead and Landon Shea advanced to the semifinals tonight by winning twice Thursday. Red Hawk senior Ian Johnson won his first match at 182 but lost a quarterfinal match.

Lake Geneva Badger's Tom Cychner and Randy Shine also advanced to the semifinals in Division 1, along with Jake Stilling of Elkhorn.

Janesville Craig's Zak Kurtz lost a tough 12-10 overtime decision to Waunakee's Josh Wipperfurth in his opening-round match.

Milton coach Pat Jauch was thrilled with Thursday's combined 7-1 record for his four senior wrestlers.

"I've been around long enough to know that anytime you get a chance to get a kid into the finals, you can't complain," Jauch said. "And we've got the chance to do that with three kids, all of whom are wrestling great right now.

"Having Ian lose leaves a bad taste, but hopefully, he can still leave here with his arm raised in his last match. I'm really proud of all four of our guys."

Wells, wrestling at 113, had no trouble winning two matches. The 2010 state champ won both matches by a combined score of 21-1 in improving to

42-4.

Shea (39-5) beat a sectional champ in his opening match, then pulled away from Fort Atkinson's Brett Bowar, 9-4, in a quarterfinal match at 126.

Whitehead, who was runner-up a year ago, moved to

39-7 on the season with a pair of 11-6 wins at 132.

Johnson won his opening-round match before losing for the first time this season in a battle of defending state champions in a quarterfinal match at 182. Muskego's Roland Dunlap, the top-ranked wrestler at 182, locked in a tight cradle on Johnson in the second period and was able to pin him in 3:32. Dunlap was leading 7-4 before the pin.

"I still say that Ian is a better wrestler than Dunlap," Jauch said. "Ian just got caught by a very athletic and stocky kid that he had trouble adjusting to."

Shine (138) and Cychner (285) won both of their matches easily to give Badger two wrestlers in the semifinals. Shine (39-3) will wrestle Keegan Einerson (34-3) of Wisconsin Rapids in tonight's semifinal bout, while Cychner (38-8) faces John Jude (47-1) of Bradley Tech.

Stilling improved to 42-2 in winning twice at 170. The junior wrestles Bryar Harper

(32-4) of DeForest in the semifinal match. Harper led the state in rushing last season.

Delavan-Darien's Kiefer and Kyndle Bennett both won opening-round matches in Division 2 and advanced to this morning's quarterfinal bouts.
