Beloit hangs on against Craig

— A furious fourth-quarter comeback fell short for Janesville Craig’s boys basketball team Saturday night.

Beloit Memorial, despite leading by 17 in the fourth quarter, needed four points late from Matt Zibert to hold off the Cougars, 61-53, in a Big Eight Conference game.

The Purple Knights missed 10 of their first 11 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter as Craig clawed back from a 17-point deficit in the fourth to cut the lead to three. Zibert made a basket and two free throws to finally put the Cougars away.

Craig (3-13, 3-9) went cold through the middle quarters, scoring only 15 points. The Cougars trailed 43-28 after three.

Nate Berry had 14 points to lead Beloit (5-9, 4-8), while Jalen Elliott added 13 and Andre Neal 12.

Brett Pickart’s had a game-high 17 points for Craig, and Paul Foster chipped in 10.

n Middleton 61, Madison West 56—Middleton avoided its first Big Eight setback with a strong fourth quarter.

Middleton’s Bryan Machmeier made a layup and free throw to compete a three-point play that tied the game at 42 to end the third quarter.

The Cardinals then outscored West, 19-14, in the final period to prevail and improve to 13-2 overall and 12-0 in the conference.

Antoine Buchanon scored 20 points to lead Middleton, and Machmeier added 16.

Malik Clements had 18 points, and Kwame Lattimer added 12 for West.
