Delavan-Darien High School students hit high note at Summerfest
DELAVAN Losing Streak, a pop-punk outfit of five Delavan-Darien High School students, just played a gig at one of the biggest music festivals in the world.
The band Thursday afternoon took the Potawatomi Stage at Summerfest. They performed a cover of “Six Feet Under the Stars,” by All Time Low and an original song titled “Done Waiting.”
The band comprises lead singer Maggie Sirkman, a sophomore; electric guitarists Tyler Hansen, a senior, and Jason Jeffrey, a junior; bassist Ryan Ettner, a junior; and drummer Anthony Welch, a junior.
The band landed the gig by placing as a semi-finalist in the Wisconsin State Music Association’s Launchpad contest. Losing Streak sent in a recorded performance, which earned them a spot at the WAMI semifinals on May 11 in Wauwatosa.
“I thought it went great,” Jeffrey said of Thursday’s performance. “It was really surprising. I wasn’t expecting the stage to be so big. It was really fun, and there were a lot of people there.”
Losing Streak’s original compositions begin as ideas from Jeffrey, who fleshes out the tunes with the rest of the band before handing them over to Sirkman, who writes the lyrics.
“We have different musical styles, so it’s been interesting to contrast styles,” she said. “I like writing lyrics more than writing the music.”
Sirkman said she has performed at venues similar in size to the Potawatomi Stage as a solo performer during choir and church performances, but Thursday’s show was Losing Streak’s biggest venue so far.
Losing Streak has played four gigs in the past couple weeks, including a set during Delavan’s July Fourth Parade.
“We performed on the back of a pickup truck to help promote a local concert venue, Bandshell, in Delavan where we’ve had a couple shows,” Jeffrey said.
“We’ve got a lot of momentum,” Sirkman said. “We want to record another EP and schedule some more shows just get our name out there.”
