Republicans hope jobs rate drops Obama
Reader poll

President Barack Obama speaks before signing HR 4348, the Surface Transportation Bill, during a ceremony in the East Room of the White House in Washington, Friday, July 6, 2012. The bill maintains jobs on transportation projects and prevents interest rate increases on new loans to millions of college students.
WASHINGTON History repeats itself, until it doesn't. That musty truism is worth remembering as pundits speculate on whether the lumbering economy will doom the re-election hopes of President Barack Obama, who has shown a knack for beating odds and breaking barriers.
Clearly, some important trends are working against him. The latest evidence is Friday's lackluster jobs report, which found the nation's unemployment rate stuck at 8.2 percent.
Franklin D. Roosevelt was the last president to win re-election with so much joblessness. Voters ousted Presidents Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush when the jobless rate was well under 8 percent.
And it's not as if Obama can divert the nation's attention from the economy, which has dominated the election from the start. His signature domestic achievement, the 2010 health care overhaul, is a mixed political blessing, uniting Republicans against him. Voters show little interest in how his administration wound down the Iraq war and killed Osama bin Laden.
And yet Obama runs even with, or slightly ahead of, Republican rival Mitt Romney in poll after poll. Campaign strategists debate the reasons.
They might include Obama's personal likeability, gaps in Romney's strategy, or Americans' grudging acceptance of a new normal in which millions of jobs are gone for good, and no single person is responsible.
If high unemployment "was a killer, he'd already be dead," said Republican pollster and consultant Mike McKenna. "The survey data tells you he's not dead."
There's a problem with applying historical precedents and conventional wisdom to Obama: He sometimes defies them.
Before the 2008 campaign took shape, how many people thought America would elect a black president? Or that a man four years removed from the Illinois Legislature would outmaneuver Bill and Hillary Clinton's political machine?
Besides, no senator had been elected president in more than four decades.
Obama's political resilience has left Republicans quarreling over how best to combat him. Romney has largely adopted a play-it-safe approach. It suggests he and his aides think the president is on a slow but steady decline and there's no need to take big gambles.
Friday's job report might bolster that view, as economists say a dramatic turnaround before Election Day is highly unlikely.
But some Republican activists are anxious, saying Romney is running an overly cautious campaign that doesn't spell out his differences with Obama in crisp, inspiring terms. The Wall Street Journal's editorial page — it's an important forum for conservative thought — blasted Romney's campaign this week for "squandering an historic opportunity" and said the campaign looked "confused" and "politically dumb."
McKenna agrees that Romney must be more daring and aggressive. A strategy of holding the ball, he said, "never wins basketball games that you're behind in."
Campaign consultants also differ about how much Obama might be helped if job creation accelerates in the next few months, which is by no means certain. Some strategists believe voters cement their views of the economy several months before Election Day. If true, it could bode badly for Obama.
In 2010, jobs suddenly rebounded in October. In 2011, another sharp rise began in September, only to drop significantly seven months later. If that pattern repeats itself this fall, then Obama might enjoy a last-minute bump before the Nov. 6 election, assuming enough voters remain persuadable.
Temple University political scientist Christopher Wlezien said research finds that voters' feelings about the economy "come into focus over time" — chiefly during a campaign's last six or seven months. He said Obama doubtlessly would like to swap this year's first quarter — in which an average of 225,000 jobs were added each month — with the recently ended second quarter, which saw only 75,000 new monthly jobs on average.
"It's not good news, but it's not devastating news," Wlezien said of the slowdown. "Voters seem to have taken into account what Obama inherited," he said, referring to a monthly job-loss rate of about 800,000 in the months just before and after Obama took office.
Come November, the barrier-breaking president may prove mortal indeed. He might fall victim to voters' fears and anger over an economy that has left millions jobless and many others underemployed.
But if there's a new normal in a brutal global economy, might there be a new normal in U.S. politics that has yet to be examined and understood?
Blogs, Twitter and cable outlets spew out political tidbits and barbs at a dizzying pace. Minority voters play bigger roles, especially in key states such as Nevada and Florida. Public opinion shifts dramatically on issues such as gay rights.
Obama turned the political world on its ear four years ago. Republicans hope Romney — a more conventional candidate who might have played a president in the movies — will prove that precedents and conventional wisdom still hold and that voters won't reward an incumbent when unemployment stays high, month after month.

Any political party that hopes for a drop in employment should be ashamed of themselves, that is as pathetic as people wanting as many deaths as possible in a war to prove a political point. If the GOP is so secure in their opposition to Obama they shouldn't have to hope for lower employment, his policies should be big enough disaster to cause it. This just supports the reason I vote 3rd party, the two major parties depend on each other to hold power and just swing it back and forth slightly. No real change will ever come about while these two are in power. Wake up.

More of fear's rhetoric. Fear how does hypocrisy look in your eyes? You are one of the loudest at complaining over rush and fox but have a problem when someone questions sources such as media matters and msnbc or even worse salon. Your obsession with the latest crazy talking point of the left, race to the bottom only highlights your own inability to see the forest past the tree. You’re declaring other states have nothing good displays ignorance. What magic yard stick do you own that has the ability to declare other people's home's, were they choose to live, is worse than yours? How incessantly high brow to declare in this off handed way you know better of their homes and states than they do. I will never understand how those on the left can think they know better on how others should live, spend their own money, or decide for them what they think is best.

Look more closely at the states these "new"Governors are presiding over. Oklahoma?Kansas? Georgia? Alabama?South Dakota? Iowa? South Carolina, Tenessee? Stop me when I get to a state that is attractive. Michigan, Ohio,Nevada? Which of these states is an attractive place to live? I have lots of friends in the south and they will all tell you the employment available there is NOTHING to be proud of, almost completely "Walmart" type jobs. Is that satisfying? Is that what we should all shoot for? I guess some of us just want more. Soon there will be no choice, the race to the bottom is almost complete. Soon we will all be working at Walmart, get ready. Its the right wing dream for America, as loing as the older Americans dont have to pay any taxes. Dumbing down the country is their goal , and unfortunatley its working.

States that have Democratic Governors that saw Unemployment drop in the Same period:
Arkansas, California, Colorado, Conneticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinios, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Oregon , West Virginia, Washington.
ALL those states also saw unemployment percentages drop in the same period, ANYONE??
What I wonder about the right wing posters on here is why do we ignore some stats and glorify others? Why is it that when ALL 50 states see unemployment rates drop its the Republican Governors who get the credit in your eyes, but when talking about national unemployment numbers you blame Obama for skewed Unemployment numbers? Which is it? I swear it doesnt matter what facts are put in front of you, you vote letters, PERIOD. YOU are the targets of campaign ads, made for dummies.

Fox News and Breitbart.com are cherry-picking numbers to suggest that the election of Republican governors in 2010 led to lower unemployment in 17 states. In fact, the trend toward lower unemployment began in these states before the new governors took office, and unemployment has dropped in every state but one since January 2011(New Jersey)
Reality: Unemployment Was Dropping In All 17 States Before New GOP Governors Took Office.
Have to use another source that RAF and others ignore because its not Lockstep with their view on Life. Rates are dropping nationwide, Not just in these states.....oops.
So if they are dropping nationwide, why leave out the other 33 states? Interesting "facts". Always hear RAF using words like fringe to define others, look in the mirror.

Funny how sources are slanted and the Retired Government Employee gets to determine whats what and whos the liar? Pot meet kettle.
Why dont you ask the people in those states who have their beloved Republican Governors how that unemployment picture REALLLY shapes up? Nothing to do with less people getting benefits? OR at all to do with fast food/walmart jobs being on the rise? Lets look at the standard of living in these states controlled by Republicans? Boy looking at simple percentages and skewed numbers are great for campaign commercials , but does anyone in Wisconsin really feel like the jobs picture is rosy here? Walmart is hiring everywhhere, is that the lifestyle we all should expect to live? Selling cheap Chinese made goods at a retail outlet for * bucks an hour? At what point to we as Americans start to expect more out of life? The RAFs of the world want us all to be "happy to have a job" , and use numbers that make his hair stand up? Talk about fringe lunatics!! Good lord people what kind of country do we want to live in? All these people lecturing about Republican "statistics" are older folks that have already lived their dream and now want to lecture you about what is out there and what you should be happy about. The America where hard work is rewarded is dead. Now hard work gets you unemployed, it gets you lower wages, lower living standards. Lower unemployment? Maybe , but being employed making 8 dollars an hour when you used to make twice that for your hard work isnt good for anyone. It has created a demand crisis that wont go away no matter what party is in power. If the GREAT majority of Americans (working class, Blue Collar) cannot make a decent living anymore, there is no consumption, hence no demand, hence no improvement. Romney can sell you people whatever his republican overlords tell him to, the FACT is until this nation returns to its roots of a strong vibrant, consuming middleclass we are all screwed.
So keep on posting your "numbers" and run with them, then maybe LOOK around in all of those republican states and see how people are living, THAT is the true tale of a successful economy. Not millions of new McDonalds and Walmart employees, wake up buttercup.

Those 80,000 jobs are much better news than the nearly 40,000 good paying tech jobs the Republican sweetheart, Meg Whitman, has lost while trying to figure out how to lead Hewlett Packard.
I see you want to give credit to Republican governors for the jobs added in states run by Republican governors. Does that mean Obama doesn't get the blame for any job losses or the credit for any job gains in any state since he doesn't run a single state? Wisconsin: More jobs lost due to "downturn in customer demand"

In other layoff-related news, Provimi Foods Inc. announced it will eliminate 50 jobs as it shuts down its kill floor and other operations at its meat-packaging plant in Seymour, which is near Green Bay. In announcing the layoffs, Provimi cited a downturn in customer demand.
Hmmm…..a “downturn in customer demand.” The idea that it’s consumers that stimulate the economy, not the so-called “job creators” sounds vaguely familiar, perhaps because we’ve discussed that very idea HERE and HERE.
When will Gov. Walker and his fellow Republican lawmakers wake up and realize that it’s not handouts and tax breaks to corporations that creates jobs – it’s a strong middle class?

{{BREAKING}} Republicans intentionally keep unemployment rate above 8%.
Not only have they been obstructing everything this President has proposed but they have actually stopped jobs from being created.
It was reported today by the MSM that more than 600,000 public workers, teachers, policemen, firemen, and postal workers, have lost their jobs because the Republican Congress refuses to pass the President's job bill.
In fact, the jobless rate would be almost a full point lower if the Republicans were not obstructing and blocking these jobs.
It is extremely important that people understand who is keeping the unemployment rate as high as it is. It is not the President - it is the Republican Congress. They should be made to answer to the voters of this country.

Regarding your question about the solar company...totally off topic as usual for you, the $25 million was to support its new North American solar plant in San Diego. This project is expected to create 450 on-site jobs and more than 1,000 indirect jobs at full capacity and will be the world's largest CPV manufacturing facility. Did you bother to find out why they claimed a 70 Milion dollar loss, I don't think so. It was due to investment to construct one of the largest photovoltaic solar power plants in Italy and the cost of Soitec acquiring a 176,000-square-foot manufacturing center on 14.8 acres of land located in San Diego. Soitec is a world leader in generating and manufacturing semiconductor materials for the electronics and energy industries. CPV technology converts sunlight directly into "clean" electricity via concentrator optics and high-efficiency solar cells. This is the best design for use in sunny regions, providing low-cost, reliable, and environmentally-friendly solar generated electricity. Soitec's CPV modules provide a market-leading 30% module efficiency (or 2 to 3 times the efficiency of conventional PV technology). Aside from being one of the top semi-conductor manufactures in the world Soitec is investing money to grow their business world wide, instead of giving it to the CEO. These might be some of the reasons you are asking for.

4 years ago, Mr. Obama said he would be a one term president if he did not fix the economy. He also said he would bring hope and change to Washington D.C. and bridge the partisan divide. Neither happened. In fact, he has been very partisan. Major disappointment to me. I will accept that both sides of Congress have been obstructionist and higly partisan. However, my idea of a good President is a president that works behind the scenes to try to draw both sides together enough to gain some good for the country. President Clinton, imo, was very good at that in his 2nd term. I think President Obama will be given a pass unlike President Carter and President Bush but I am really bothered by his "not my fault ... all the fault of congress and of the administration that left office 3 1/2 years ago". He can not make laws and he can not create jobs. However, he certainly should be working harder to get Congress to bridge the differences. What about the discussions between himself and Boehner? So close but no cigars. What about the Simpson-Boyles proposals? Dropped like a hot potato. What we have here is a failure to communicate (in the words of Cool Hand Luke). IMHO

I suppose we could go back to losing 800K jobs a month which is what was happening under a Republican administration. I can't understand why gaining 75K jobs a month is heading in the wrong direction. This is an example of America's fast food mentality. Even if Romney gets elected, it's highly unlikely that he will be able to turn the economy around in his first 100 days either. If Romney gets elected maybe he could ask all the companies that Blain Capital outsourced jobs to other counntries, to bring those jobs back to the U.S., that would be a couple of million jobs.

I think Obama should worry about the silent majority. We Are Here and We Will Be at the Polls in November. If Romney runs things poorly like Obama he will be out too. The silent majority showed up in Wisconsin for Scott Walker. We are still here, watching and waiting.

Not long ago, the papers were writing about another "historic" event. The recall of a governor, and how it was going to make history.
Now that Scott Walker has made history, where have the headlines gone?
Democrats and Unions waged a war on Wisconsin. In the end, all they got was a crooked win in Racine. Their "victory" rings hollow, based on the fraud. The legislature will not convene until January, democrats can not call for a special session. But, they will continue to whine and demand that a special session be called because they NOW want to talk about jobs. Where have they been?
The recall elections have also shown what the GAB is all about, and it is NOT about upholding our election laws.

Wow, what a headline. Most of the folks on the right I know see the headline very different. Unforgivably, poor policy has resulted in sustained high unemployment.
