President Barack Obama meets with supporters after arriving aboard Air Force One at the Norfolk International Airport in Norfolk, Va., Friday.

— President Barack Obama is keeping up a drumbeat of skepticism over Mitt Romney's insistence — displayed in a blitz of TV interviews — that he stepped down from his private equity firm years earlier than federal records indicate.

Obama planned another day of campaigning in Virginia on Saturday, a state he won in 2008 but before that last supported a Democratic presidential nominee in 1964. Advisers said he would remind voters of the discrepancies between Securities and Exchange Commission filings and Romney's recollection of his role at the Boston-based firm.

His re-election campaign released an ad that repeated its allegation that Romney's Bain Capital shipped American jobs to China and Mexico; that Romney has personal wealth in investments in Switzerland, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands; and that as governor of Massachusetts, he outsourced state jobs to India.

"Mitt Romney's not the solution. He's the problem," Obama's latest ad says as it plays video of Romney awkwardly singing "America the Beautiful."

The ad was set to run in the battleground states of Colorado, Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The ad, targeting Romney's vast personal wealth, comes as Democrats — and some Republicans — call for Romney to release tax returns going back several years. Romney has said anew that he won't go beyond releasing his 2010 tax records and, before the election, his 2011 taxes.

"You can never satisfy the opposition research team of the Obama organization," Romney told CBS on Friday. In the same round of interviews in which he defended his account of his role at Bain, Romney said Obama owed him an apology for an aide's suggestion that the Security and Exchange Commission filings, if false, could bring a felony charge.

"This is simply beneath the dignity of the presidency of the United States," Romney told ABC.

It wasn't just Obama, though, pushing the presumptive Republican nominee to put the issue of his tax returns and wealth to rest.

"There is no whining in politics," chided John Weaver, a veteran Republican strategist. "Stop demanding an apology, release your tax returns."

Romney seemed unlikely to find any contrition from the Obama campaign — a spokesman said there would be no apology — as the president's aides dug in on a storyline they see as a win for them.

The precise role Romney played at Bain between 1999 and 2001 raises questions about his credibility and whether he was in charge when Bain was sending jobs overseas during that period.

At stake is Romney's key argument that as a former businessman, he has the experience necessary to create jobs and spur a struggling economy. The Obama campaign has countered that Romney, in fact, ran a firm that pioneered job outsourcing and that his experience is that of an investor.

SEC documents have surfaced showing that Romney was in charge of the Boston-based company from 1999 to 2001, the period in which Bain outsourced jobs and ran companies that fell into bankruptcy. Romney says he was at the head of the company as it transitioned to new ownership but did not manage it.

Obama said the questions raised in numerous media reports and highlighted by his own campaign aides were a legitimate part of the race for the White House.

"Ultimately, I think, Mr. Romney is going to have to answer those questions because if he aspires to being president, one of the things you learn is you're ultimately responsible for the conduct of your operations," Obama said in an interview with WJLA-TV in Virginia.

Romney called that "Chicago-style politics at its worst" and accused the president and his campaign of trying to shift attention from the persistently sluggish economy and unemployment of 8 percent or higher for more than 40 months.

In trying to put the matter behind him and return the campaign to his economic arguments, Romney declared he had "no role whatsoever in the management" of the company after he left to take over the Salt Lake City Olympic Games in early 1999.

Romney acknowledged that he would have benefited financially from Bain's operations even after he left management of the firm to others. That could open him up to criticism that he gained from investment in companies that sent jobs overseas.

"All of the investors participate in the success or failure of various investments, just like you do as a shareholder of an enterprise," Romney told CBS.

Bain Capital issued a statement earlier saying that Romney "remained the sole stockholder for a time while formal ownership was being documented and transferred to the group of partners who took over management of the firm in 1999."

Obama aides went to work to raise doubts about that, as well.

"I don't think it takes three years to clear up a technicality or a clerical error," spokesman Ben LaBolt told Univision.

Obama complained to a Virginia audience that Romney “invested in companies that have been called pioneers of outsourcing. I don’t want a pioneer in outsourcing. I want some insourcing.”

Apple moved so many jobs overseas that economist Jared Bernstein cited the company as “an example of why it’s so hard to create middle-class jobs in the U.S. now.” Who’s Jared Bernstein? Oh, he just used to be one of Obama’s economic advisers, up until last year.

General Electric, headed up by Obama’s good friend Jeffrey Immelt – hand-picked by the President to chair his council of economic advisors – outsources software work to India.

Honorfirst: I don't drive nice cars. Our cars are 1994 and 2001. My house was a nice house, but we don't have the money right now to do repairs that are needed since my husband lost his job. Granted he is working now at 56 years old and doing a very hard job, which is taking it's toll on him. Went to school to learn a trade, but could not find a job in his field. What makes you think that others are not aloud to have nice things? If they HAD a decent paying job and lived within their means, are they not entitled to have some nice things? Or are the elite the only ones entitled to the nice things in life? Alot of people were thrown into poverty when they lost their jobs that they have been working hard at for many years. Don't assume that everyone was living off the high hog and spent money like there was no tomorrow. My Father had his own business, he is now retired, and my parents taught us to work hard for our money and to spend wisely. Please quit generalizing and make it look like everyone has fallen into poverty because of their own faults.

Y_tnk: What a clever play on words, did you learn that in Jr. High? If you really believe that taxes should be raised on the ones that already pay the largest share, you need help. And I stand by my comment that many in poverty live in big houses, drive nice cars, have large families, dress nicely... Open your eyes and look around, you can't possibly be that naive. Finally, as a veteran, I don't need your lecture on what is patriotic. The pathetic spending by Obama is leading this country down the tubes. This is the guy that is wiping out the middle class with his drive toward socialism. And you don't seem to have a clue.

THANK YOU WHY_THINK, FINALLY SOMEONE WHO DOES GET IT!

"The wealth of the top 400 families = the wealth of the bottom 50%
.
The wealth of the top 1% = bottom 50%
.
The Bush tax cuts for the wealthy (400 families/1%) are more the 10 years old.
.
The middle-class is struggling the number in poverty is growing.
.
Mr. Romney wants to double-down on trickle-down economics. Trickle-down doesn't work. The only thing that trickles is crap.
.
It is time to end the tax cuts for those making over $250k. Remember, it is only an increase for what they make over $250k. In addition, those crying for the small businesses... 3.5% of small businesses would have their taxes raised. Many of the 3.5% are not ma' and pa' small businesses. The 3.5% are likely law firm type small businesses.
.
The tax cuts have been in place long enough. Those at the top, receiving those cuts did not help grown the middle-class. They got richer and the middle-class got trickled on.
.
Insanity, doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
.
It is time the insanity of rewarding the rich for trickling on the middle-class ENDS!.

Create jobs!? Really! No representative should brag that they have created any jobs. Period. Just like here in good old Wisconsin with Walker and all his jobs he allegedly created. I have seen many people here in Janesville after they have worked months and who were finally happy to have a job to be let go. Companies are creating 2nd and 3rd shift positions until they don't need you anymore and then you are gone. These poor people have to start looking for a job all over again. To all you companies and representatives, DON'T brag about creating jobs unless you can create permanent jobs for people. I don't care to hear anymore about your temporary or alleged permanent jobs. These temp jobs are not jobs people can rely on to support and feed their families and keep their homes. We NEED permanent jobs!

hfirst,
I "sound like", but you know nothing about me. Your ASSumptions are wrong.
.
Personally, I am doing fine... my family fine.
.
However, my country is not doing fine. The middle-class is shrinking and the wealth is being concentrated by fewer and fewer. That wealth also controls our politics. I am concerned.
.
I listen to people make excuses for the wealthy "job creators" on a daily basis. Taxes, regulations, employee wages, unions, etc... These excuses have been used to give these "job creators" a free pass to create jobs in third world countries where working conditions are something we, THE USA, would not have tolerated in 1900.
.
The wealthy "job creators" are getting richer while creating "jobs" in these third world countries and then, AT THE SAME TIME, complaining about the cost of the poor in this country.
.
Yes, there are people who abuse the system... take Mr. Romney for example. Tax shelters to avoid paying taxes.. legal but also UNpatriotic.
.
Think about this... President Obama was ripped apart for a US Flag lappel pin missing yet Mr. Romney is able to legally skip paying taxes and all is quiet.
.
Apparently, according to the conservative right, it is more important and more patriotic to wear a button then to pay all of your taxes. We agree that forgetting a button and using tax shelters are both legal but only one upset fox news, rush, hannity and right wing extremists.
.
I am for the middle-class in this country. I want it to grow and do well. I recognize that when this happens I do better. Life is better for me.
.
I believe that president obama, although extremely frustrating at times, is more in agreement than I am.
.
BTW, your characterization of those in poverty with big families, houses etc... is horribly and pathetically ignorant.

Why_Think,

You sound like a "don't have" that is attempting to get into the "do_haves" wallets. Why don't you and the others that feel the same as you do try to make your own way in life like the successful ones do. I can tell you people are getting tired of supporting the people that suggest they are living in poverty, but many drive nice cars, have large families, nice houses, dress nicely... Wouldn't it be better to assist them in getting their priorities straight and make better decisions instead of supporting their bad decisions? Sort of like the saying that goes something like; give them fish and they can enjoy a meal or teach them to fish and they can enjoy many meals...

Wonder what Mittens is hiding in those tax returns?

Much of this dust-up, created by the Romney camp and set in motion by the Drudge Report, is to distract from Willard Mitt Romney's failure to release twelve years worth of his tax returns - a precedent set in place by his father. Release twelve years of tax returns, Willard Mitt Romney, like your father did and like President Obama and Vice President Biden have. Your own father said, "“One year could be a fluke, perhaps done for show." What are you hiding, Willard Mitt Romney? [ http://www.taxhistory.org/www/website.ns... ]

"Mitt Romney yesterday finally admitted that he pays a tax rate of about 15 percent, though he continues to put off releasing his full tax returns. However, when Mitt’s father, George Romney, ran for President in 1968, he released 12 years of tax returns, which revealed that he paid a 37 percent effective tax rate." [ http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/01... ]

Making this demand is not about class warfare or class envy or any of the other excuses Romney and his supporters use to deflect attention on the subject. It’s about transparency. It’s a relevant quest made all the more important since news reports revealed Romney’s tax shelters and bank accounts outside the United States. Even Republican Party elder Haley Barbour says, “I would” to the tax return-release question." [ http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post... ]

Wislady you are so misinformed. Would you rather states continue to have their hands tied when it comes to finding more ways to help people become employed?
"HHS is encouraging states to consider new, more effective ways to meet the goals of TANF, particularly helping parents successfully prepare for, find, and retain employment. Therefore, HHS is issuing this information memorandum to notify states of the Secretary’s willingness to exercise her waiver authority under section 1115 of the Social Security Act to allow states to test alternative and innovative strategies, policies, and procedures that are designed to improve employment outcomes for needy families." HHS will only approve waivers relating to the requirement to work that make changes intended to lead to more effective means of meeting the work goals of TANF.

Do you ever bother to research any of the right wing propaganda articles that you get your information from? It was either you or donnaw that suggested I not rely on Poltifact so much and be willing to read other articles to see a different point of view. I do that. I print off and read these articles from liberal and conservative sources. I then highlight all main points and then investigate to find out the facts. I do not use biased sources in this research. I use govt agencies actual reports, White House papers, Project Vote Smart, Poltifact, Fact Check and studies conducted which cite their sources. There is nothing wrong with reading articles to get a different perspective but why would anyone base their decisions on a point of view other than the truth? You cannot just blindly accept everything stated in these articles, otherwise you are allowing yourself to be misinformed
