Janesville 14s fall to Eau Claire
EAU CLAIRE Janesville’s road to the 14-year-old Babe Ruth state championship turned rocky Monday after an 8-5 loss to host Eau Claire put it in a win or go home situation in the double-elimination tournament.
Janesville must defeat the winner of this afternoon’s Sturgeon Bay-Middleton game to remain in state title contention. If Janesville wins the 6 p.m. game, it will have to defeat Eau Claire twice Wednesday for the state title.
Eau Claire scored four runs—two earned—on four hits in the sixth inning to take an 8-4 lead and seal the victory.
Janesville scored four runs on three hits in the fourth, including Connor Perkins’ two-run double, to take a 4-1 lead. Eau Claire bounced back to tie it, scoring three runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth.
Janesville starting pitcher Zach Bailey and reliever Hunter Van Zandt combined to allow 10 hits. Bailey allowed four runs on six hits and Van Zandt surrendered four runs—two earned—on four hits.
