Janesville 11s advance in Ripken tournament

The Janesville 11-year-old squad split two games Friday and earned a bye for the opening round of single-elimination play that starts today in the Cal Ripken Ohio Valley 11s Major 70 Regional.

Janesville finished pool play with a 2-1 record and earned a No. 4 seed among the 12 teams. The top four teams earned a first-round bye today.

Janesville plays at 2 p.m. today against the winner of the No. 5-vs.-No. 12 seed game.

On Friday, Janesville lost to Mattoon (Ill.), 1-0. Mattoon finished pool play with a 3-0 record and earned the No. 1 seed.

“We didn’t swing the bats very well,” Coach Pat Campbell said. “We had chances but couldn’t come up with key hits.

“The game took about an hour to play,” Campbell said. “There was a lot of defense and good pitching.”

Mattoon won the game with a run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.

Jordan Bailey, Jacob Campbell and Ross March each had a hit for Janesville.

Bailey pitched three scoreless innings, and Dan Blomgren came in for the final 2 2/3.

Jacob Fieiras earned Player of the Game honors with his defensive plays at first base.

Campbell said the game showed his players that they could play with top-seeded Mattoon, which allowed just one run in three games.

“They are very beatable,” Campbell said.

Janesville came back to defeat Irvington (Ind.), 9-5.

“We were in control the whole game,” Campbell said. “We swung the bats better.”

March had two hits, and Jacob Campbell earned Player of the Game honors.

Keaton Arreazola pitched the first three innings. March pitched the final three innings.
