— The Janesville 12-year-old Cal Ripken squad had a successful day in the Ohio Valley Major 70 Regional tournament Friday.

Coach Rick Kyle’s squad won three games in pool play and earned a bye in the first round of the single-elimination play that begins today.

Kyle was keeping a cap on his team’s emotions after the three-victory day.

“We went to the Ohio Valley Regional last year as 11-year-olds and won our three pool games and then lost our first elimination game,” Kyle said. “So I would like to win one or two single-elimination games. I would like to win the championship.”

Janesville opened the day by defeating Schererville (Ind.), 7-6, in a game that was completed after being suspended in the final inning Thursday by rain and lightning.

Sam Urquhart and Jacob Pfeiffer each drove in two runs for Janesville. Urquhart went 2-for-3 and scored a run, while Pfeiffer scored two runs.

Janesville scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh for the game-winner. Skylar Christenson singled down the left field line. Justin Burke laid down a sacrifice bunt and when the catcher threw the ball away, Christenson was able to score from first.

Pfeiffer’s two-run single keyed a three-run second, and Urquhart’s singled home two runs in the third.

The local squad then defeated St. Matthews (Ky.), 2-1, and Effingham (Ill.), 10-6, to conclude its day.

“Pitching was the key for the day,” Kyle said.

Luke Malmanger, Jayden Ellis, Nick Cramer and Noah Berghammer each pitched well Friday.

Malmanger was the Player of the Game in the victory over the Kentucky squad.

Janesville scored four runs in the first inning and six in the second to romp past Effingham in the final game of the day.

Skylar Christenson had a double, Cramer went 3-for-3 with three singles, and Berghammer, Urquhart and Sam Garvoille each added two hits.
