Monroe earns way back to state
PORTAGE Monroe High’s girls softball team is on a roll.
The Cheesemakers won their 14th straight game Thursday, and with it, earned a second straight trip to the WIAA Division 2 State Tournament.
Becca Armstrong pitched a complete-game four-hitter to lead Monroe to a 3-0 win over Richland Center in the title game of the Portage Sectional. Monroe (21-7) plays Plymouth
(23-6) in a state semifinal game at 8 p.m. next Thursday at Goodman Diamond in Madison.
Monroe gave Armstrong all the support she needed with three runs in the bottom of the second. Two Richland Center errors, along with Heather Barta’s RBI fielder’s choice, paved the way.
“We picked a great time to be playing our best ball of the season,” Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. “We’ve been on a nice roll since the early part of May.
“Today, Becca didn’t have her best stuff, but she made good pitches with runners on base.
“And defensively, we made plays. I think there were 11 flyball outs, which is a lot in a high school softball game. Our outfielders did a nice job.”
Armstrong struck out three and walked three. The junior has thrown three shutouts thus far in the postseason.
