Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney visited Janesville and spoke at Monterey Mills on Monday, June 18.
JANESVILLE — Despite a small clash with protesters, police reported no incidents of violence and no arrests at the Monday appearance of presidential candidate Mitt Romney at the Monterey Mills plant in Janesville.
The Janesville Police Department had 45 officers on duty for Romney's visit, Sgt. Brian Vaughn said.
Some police handled traffic, crowd control and gate security at the event while others were stationed as extra security at the Hampton Inn in Janesville, where Romney spent the night Sunday, Vaughn said.
U.S. Rep Paul Ryan, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and U.S. Senator Ron Johnson also were at the appearance Monday.
About 10 Rock County sheriff's deputies helped, and Dane County provided an armored vehicle. Dozens of Secret Service agents were on site, Vaughn estimated.
Police shut down Delavan Drive in front of the plant for most of Romney's appearance.
Police reported no major clashes at the event, although at one point police pushed a group of about 30 protesters back from a spot on a grass terrace across the street from Monterey Mills.
Vaughn said the protesters had gathered within 75 yards of a "safe zone" that the Secret Service had set up around Romney's motorcade, which was parked on plant property.
Police told other protesters who wanted to enter plant property that they had to leave any backpacks and picket signs outside as part of Secret Service security protocols, Vaughn said.
He said city workers came in at 4 a.m. Monday to set up security gates, and officers worked from Thursday through Monday to stay in touch with the Secret Service.

NVgrf - Why would any of us be disappointed because there were no arrests? I'm actually glad there were no issues at his campaign stop and hope the same for Obama even though I won't be voting for him. So, why does your glass have to be half empty? Just let go of the hate!
