— UW-Whitewater lost to Carthage College 74-68 Friday in an NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament opener.

The Warhawks conclude the season, 22-6.

Whitewater went on a 12-0 run in the second half to gain a 51-48 lead on Mary Merg’s layup with 11:31 to play. Carthage fought back to take the lead for good, 54-52, on Dani Ripkey’s jumper with 7:10 to play.

“They had a couple of big baskets and we didn’t do a very good job to make rebounds,” Whitewater coach Keri Carollo said. “We needed get a couple of big rebounds.’’

The Warhawks held a five-point lead at 15:29 of the first half, but the half ended with the game tied at 34.

Merg finished with 15 points, Kaitlyn Thill added 13 points and Jamie Swanson chipped in 10 for the Warhawks. Diana Jacklin scored a game-high 23 points for Carthage.

“Jacklin is an extremely quick athlete,” Carollo said. “She can get to the rim in a flash of light.’’

This was the Whitewater women’s fifth straight NCAA tournament appearance.

“This group came a long way from the beginning of the year,” Carollo said. “Our seniors have been in the tournament all four years. It stinks we lost, but we had a pretty good run.’’
