Demos earns fourth All-America honor

— Demos an All-America again

GRINNELL, Iowa—Janesville Parker High graduate and UW-Whitewater junior Shelby Demos earned All-America honors by finishing second in the women’s high jump at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship here Friday.

Demos cleared 5-feet-10½ inches. This is the fourth time Demos has earned All-America honors, having placed second in 2011 and sixth in 2010, as well as third in the national outdoor meet in 2011.

Elizabeth Evans of Rose-Hulman Institute won with the same height as Demos, but broke the tie with fewer attempts.

With her four All-America finishes, Demos is the most decorated athlete in the history of Warhawk women’s indoor track and field.

Warhawk teammate Lexie Sondgeroth also earned All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 18-1½. Skye Morrison of Wartburg College won the event with a distance of 20-3.0.

Whitewater’s JoLyn Owen earned a spot in the pentathlon, finishing tenth with 3,249 points. Emma Dewart of Ithaca College took first place with 3,674 points. The school record holder, Owen also qualified for the NCAA III pentathlon last year.

The top eight finishers in each event, including relays, are track and field All-Americans.

East Troy’s Zaeske finishes sixth

GRINNELL, Iowa—UW-Whitewater’s Cory Zaeske finished sixth in the long jump to earn All-America honors at the NCAA Division III indoor track and field meet Friday.

The East Troy High grad jumped 23 feet, 2 ½ inches to take sixth.

Warhawk teammate Dave Kuczynski placed second in the long jump with a mark of 23-10.0.

Jonas Elysme of Wartburg College won the long jump with a leap of 23-10 ¾.

UW-Whitewater’s Mike Judd ran in the preliminaries of the 60 meter hurdles, breaking his school record of 8.13 with a 8.07 time Friday. Judd had the top time in the prelims, and advances to today’s finals.

Whitewater’s Nick Bee finished 12th in the 60-meter prelimins with a 7.03 time. He did not advance to the finals.

In addition to Judd in the 60 hurdles, Whitewater will have Marcus Smith in the triple jump, Whitewater High graduate Luke Buchholz in the high jump, and a 1,600-meter relay team competing today.

Kersten shines for Carroll

Janesville Parker High graduate and Carroll University freshman Andy Kersten allowed just one hit was pitching the Red Hawks to a victory over Newbury (Mass.) College on Friday in Fort Myers, Fla.

Kersten, a right-hander, struck out six as he evened his record at 1-1.

I remember when all this little lady wanted to do was put on shows for her neighbors in her back yard.
