— A Bloomfield woman pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a charge that she stole $50,000 from her ex-husband's uncle.

Johnalee A. Kawalec, 43, of W1544 Lake Geneva Highway, Bloomfield, is charged with felony theft greater than $10,000.

Her ex-husband's uncle called Lake Geneva Police on Dec. 1 to report problems with his bank account. He told police that Kawalec, a third-grade teacher at Lake Geneva's Star Center Elementary School, is authorized to be his power of attorney and was told to deposit his pension, Social Security and other checks into his account.

He told police he could find no record of the expected deposits, according to the criminal complaint.

Police found that more than $50,000 of the man's checks were cashed but not deposited into his account, according to the complaint.

Kawalec is due back in court May 10.
