— Eric Schmitz figured in both UW-Whitewater’s victories over visiting UW-Stevens Point in a WIAC baseball doubleheader Monday.

Schmitz pitched two innings of hitless relief in the opener to secure a save in the Warhawks’ 15-9 win. Schmitz returned to start Game 2, and blanked the Pointers for 6 2/3 innings en route to a 3-0 victory.

The Warhawks are 12-8 in the WIAC and 22-13 overall. Stevens Point is 13-7 and 25-11.

Schmitz (6-2) allowed four hits, walked one and notched seven strikeouts. Reliever Tom Kerndt held the Pointers hitless through the final 2 1/3 innings to gain a save and complete the shutout.

In the opener, the teams combined for 32 hits. Dylan Friend and Marty Herum led the Warhawks’ 18-hit attack with three hits apiece and combined for 10 RBIs, with Herum knocking in seven runs.

The Warhawks travel to UW-Superior for doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday.
