— Janesville Craig’s boys and girls track and field teams dominated Friday night’s Demon Invitational.

The Cougar boys, behind Tommy Meister’s record-setting run in the 1,600, won the 10-team title with 172 points. Waukesha South was a distant second with 118.

Craig’s girls won the title with 145, with Franklin second with 108.5. Janesville Parker finished seventh with 56.5.

Meister, a senior, broke the meet record in the 1,600 with a winning time of 4:18.15. Craig’s Calvin Coleman won the long jump and triple jump, and was also on the victorious 800 and 1,600 relay teams.

“Since I’ve been at Craig, this is the best effort I can ever remember by a Craig team at a big meet like this,” Craig boys coach Jeff Deininger said. “Up and down the lineup, we got a great effort from everybody.

“Our biggest plus right now is that we’ve got a lot of options with our lineup. We can put a lot of kids in a lot of different events and score points.”

Other winners for the Craig boys were Ryan Kind in the 200 and Evan Lalor in the 800.

Milton’s A.J. Natter, a University of Nebraska football recruit, won the shot put and discus.

The Craig girls dominated in the field events. Senior Kaylyn Funk won both the shot put and discus. Alli Calkins, Aisha Coleman and Ashley Pohlman finished 1-2-3 in the triple jump. Craig also won the 400 and 1,600 relays.

“I’m very happy with the way the girls performed tonight,” Craig girls coach Mark Marsden said. “We’re trying to get ready for our conference meet, so this was kind of the start of gearing up for that.

“The highlight for us was our two relay teams winning against some strong competition, along with a great win by Katie Bagley in the 300 hurdles. And Kaylyn had a PR in discus and nearly set a school record in the shot put.”

Miranda Slaback medaled in three events to lead the Parker girls.
