La Crosse defeats Whitewater for WIAC baseball title

Whether it was the regular season or postseason, the UW-Whitewater baseball team could not defeat UW-La Crosse.

The Warhawks lost twice to the No. 1-seeded Eagles on Saturday as La Crosse won the WIAC Tournament title.

Whitewater played three games Saturday. The Warhawks began the day losing to La Crosse, 13-3. Whitewater then pounded Oshkosh, 13-6, to get into the championship round against La Crosse.

The Eagles then defeated the Warhawks, 9-1, to complete the undefeated run through the double-elimination tournament and earn the WIAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.

La Crosse defeated Whitewater four times during the regular season and added the two victories Saturday. The Eagles go into the national tournament with a 21-1 record in their last 22 games.

Whitewater (29-15) now will await the NCAA Division III field to see if it is awarded an at-large bid.

The Warhawks suffered their first loss in the tournament against La Crosse on Saturday morning.

The Warhawks built a 3-0 lead with single runs in the first three innings.

A three-run homer by Eagle designated hitter Adam Cordova tied the game in the fourth. Jay Fanta’s grand slam in the fifth helped the Eagles take command.

La Crosse starter Garrett Scray held the Warhawks to five hits.
