UW faces Bennett, Virginia in Challenge
PEWAUKEE Virginia men’s basketball coach Tony Bennett is coming back to Madison.
As expected, Wisconsin will host the Cavaliers and Bennett in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge next season.
UW officials announced the matchup on Monday.
The game is set for Nov. 28, the second night of the Challenge. Tip time and TV plans are to be announced.
UW and Virginia have split two meetings.
Virginia won the teams’ first meeting, in 1974. UW won in 1988. Both games were on neutral floors.
UW is 6-7 all-time in the Challenge, though the Badgers are 4-1 at home. UW saw its three-game winning streak in the Challenge snapped last season with a 60-57 loss at No. 5 North Carolina.
The six victories ties UW for the most among Big Ten teams along with Illinois, Michigan State, Northwestern and Ohio State.
The Badgers’ winning percentage (. 462) is tied for third among Big Ten teams behind Ohio State (.545) and Michigan State (.500).
UW is coming off back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances for the first time in program history. Wisconsin suffered a 64-63 loss to top-seeded Syracuse last season to finish 26-10.
Virginia, which is 1-3 on the road and 7-5 overall in the Challenge, is coming off its first NCAA tournament appearance since the 2006-‘07 season.
Led by Bennett, a former assistant at UW, the Cavaliers finished 22-10 overall last season. The Cavaliers’ season ended with a 71-45 loss to Florida in the second round of the tournament.
